I'm always amazed at these hometown places that aren't that good but generate a cult following over the years.
I tried Monjunis for the first time. I was thinking I would order Chicken Parmesan or Fettuccini Alfredo but the waitress was quick to recommend the Chicken Aurora so that's what I went for.
First of all, let me state that the waitress was super attentive. This was one of the best I've experienced in a long time. She was awesome.
Inside has a cluttered look from decorating days gone by.
They brought out a basket of bread with a side of marinara sauce. The bread was just toasted sliced bread and the marinara was overly sweet. When I go to an Italian place, I want the bread to knock my socks off. This didn't. I wouldn't come back for the bread alone like I would say some places.
The Chicken Aurora arrived quickly and was not much more than baked spaghetti with some grilled chicken thrown in. The sauce wasn't that flavorful and was sparse so it ended up being a pretty tasteless dish.
So we've come to the big question??? Would I go back? Nothing I ate will go on my gotta try it list. Nothing made me want to go back. I may go back at some point to try a dish I'm used to but it wouldn't be my recommended...
Read moreOkay so before I say this... I grew up in Jersey just outside of NYC heavily influenced by good Italian eats and such. When I heard about the ravings of Monjunis I figured "why not". Well I can confidently say this place has... terrible italian food. First the "marinara sauce" that's is apparently gods grace here.... it's gross. Marinara should never... NEVER... be this sweet. It was like eating liquid tomato candy... disgusting. Apparently it's the bees knees to overcook pasta here too... like to the point of instant mush in the mouth. I had a Chicken Parmesan while my Fiance had the more traditional noodle dish of straight spaghetti with meat sauce. I tried both... equally disappointing. The closest I found to halfway decent italian is Giuseppes Pastacafe on Line Avenue... go there instead. Service was fine I guess and the decor... kind of a weird 1950s diner vibe... which again... is a Jersey thing so I speak from that perspective. I guess if you're from the local area... and like everything else in the south enjoy overly sweet... then sure. Go ahead and try. But if you're an out of stater... particularly from an area with a heavy italian culture..... this...
Read moreWow, been going to Monjunnis for 25 years from the original location on Louisiana Avenue in Shreveport to currently the address in Baton Rouge Louisiana weekly. I work in Baton Rouge but come home on the weekends to Bossier City. Well, the Bossier City address will not absolutely give you a bag of their famous bread with sauce that is a staple for Monjunis when you are doing takeout. They give you three pieces of bread per meal and no sauce! They were adamant about it! The woman that worked there stated she had worked there for years and years since 1991 and that’s how or is. The bread as an appetizer and part of the meal is why I ordered from there! That’s like the chips and salsa of Mexican place! Furthermore, the one meatball in the spaghetti was about the size of a golf ball and not a very large baseball size meatballs that used to be served! It used to be large and it was noticed amongst the spaghetti, well tonight we had to find it! Will not go there again and may not even go to the location in Baton Rouge or Louisiana again because they are associated. I make my own sauce at home since I know the combo and I’ll get over it but they won’t get my...
