Having spent a lot of time in Mexico, perhaps we’re spoiled. We were drawn in by an article in El Planeta, a local Spanish-language newspaper – which extolled the virtues of Angela’s Puebla-style mole poblano. We should have heeded the first warning sign: only gringos were dining there. We ordered the mole poblano and the pipian verde. Having spent time in Puebla, we’ve tasted some of the best mole on earth – and it sure wasn’t Angela’s. The chicken was dry and tasteless. The mole was drab and boring. (The factory-packaged mole “Don Pancho” is about a zillion times better). The presentation was nouvelle; the portions were small considering the price. The pipian verde was also boring; you’ll find much better in any mercado in central Mexico, and any taqueria in LA or San Francisco. We were asked if we wanted tortillas – and were brought FOUR tasty hot tortillas – and charged $8 for them. A weak-but-fresh margarita was $7.50.
When we arrived, we chatted briefly with the owner in Spanish and showed him our copy of El Planeta. It’s not as if he thought we were a couple of suburban gringos who feared Mexican food.
I also must say that in all our time in Mexico, we have never been overcharged. While I’ve eaten mediocre food there, even that food was more flavorful. This wasn’t even up to Mexican mercado standards.
So… if you don’t really like Mexican food, this may be the perfect place for you. And if you enjoy being grossly overcharged, you may have found your personal heaven. But for those who actually prefer flavor with their food - and being treated like a valued customer, I suggest Tijuana or Cinco de Mayo or many of the Mexican restaurants in Chelsea. They're not perfect, but they're...
Read moreThis has always been one of my go-to places, and I’ve loved coming here for years. Unfortunately, today’s visit was really disappointing and left a sour taste. I was there to celebrate my partner’s birthday and mentioned that to our server, Jenny M, but it went completely unacknowledged. The restaurant was empty — we were the only guests — so I expected great service, but it was honestly the opposite. She got my order wrong, and I had to call her over several times before she finally came to the table, rolling her eyes as she did. When I politely mentioned the appetizer mistake, she took the plate and, as she walked away, said, “What? Are you allergic to chicken?” — even though my main dish was chicken. The comment felt rude and unnecessary. We’ve been loyal customers for years and chose this restaurant for a special occasion, but the service made it feel like a mistake. Even small gestures like turning the music up — something we’ve always enjoyed about the atmosphere — were ignored. We eventually played music from our phones just to lighten the mood. This experience was really disappointing, especially knowing how great this place can be. I hope management addresses this, because loyal guests like us truly value the restaurant and want to see it live up to its...
Read moreThe food is delicious and amazing. Only issue i had to face when I went in there is the service how they treat you just because of who you are . I went there with my girlfriend we smoked some weed at the house before we walked over there. As we all know weed is now legal in Mass. so we sat down and the girls who ere serving they took so long to come to us after they brought the menu they wouldn't come back until I had to stand up andcall them over . we places our orders and the girl was rushing us . I hate the fact that I went to place like this where I'm offering to spend my money and they treat us like we bad people just because we smell like weed . So from now on I only go when there is server I think she's Italian kinda thick and gorgeous and always treats me with respect and she has beautiful smile I think her name is Amanda but i always go check make sure she there if she is I'll go in and eat if she not then I just go somewhere else because of those 3 girls who treated me and my girl with horbble service due to the fact we smell like weed. The funny thing is the owner himself always treated me and my brother with respect evens if we came in smell like weed . We always tip good and paid our bill but I just don't really like how those...
