And just like that...it doesn't take much to tell someone has been either listening to the reviews, or the police reports or the people voting with their wallets. Either way it is safe to say the hotel is backas a quality place to stay. Culture is changing and product has followed. Stayed recently and seriously couldn't remember when the last time it has been that pleasant a stay. I'm frequently upgraded here so it wasn't a matter of a better room. Well done!
OLD: After nearly a decade staying here it's time to finally review. This hotel I'm certain I have and still frequent the most in the entire country. The price isn't beatable in Boston accept maybe the new Home2 and the Crosstown Hampton. The front desk staff even with turnover and new hires is absolutely great! The "post-pandemic" shuttle drivers are kind and courteous and extremely helpful to people.
The rooms are starting to really really be bad. Roof leaks on the top floor flooding entire sections of room. Fire alarm keypads frequently in alert (probably due to ground faults (guessing from the hotel symptoms). How the staff stays pleasant, especially overnight, continuously silencing it is bonkers. KUDOS again to them. The amenities are horribly inconsistent: some rooms have one and others have another (brand/selection). The tubs in nearly all the rooms are either clogged beyond the help of an auger or drain so slowly you will inevitably be standing in your own dirt slurry and have to wash your feet right before or after getting out. Microwaves seem hard to determine at check-in where you will or won't find them. This may be more obvious at booking but due to conditions of many of rooms (see above) there are many you shouldn't hesitate to ask to be moved from. But then ensuring you have a microwave refrigerator (deluxe room?) isn't a fault, it's just not easy and obvious.
The suttle brand transition from DoubleTree to DoubleTree Club had it's impacts too. Normal brand 6a breakfast starts at 7a here undermining the previously "business traveler" target focus. The Marketplace offering of food slaps in the face typical gratis ☕ and only has paid Starbucks. And eventhough the marketplace products are tasty, the team completely misses the mark with service speed and hospitality. I've never "caught them at their best" it's always a chore of long suffering eating there from 6-7a before they ALSO start servicing the buffet.
Unless you really need somewhere to stay for cheap and bare bones you can easily work yourself right back up the 20-30/night savings you might have sought. One example is the shuttle is great that it's back but it stops running at 930p. With several flight coming in at and after this time, a $20-50 rideshare could have made staying the Boston Airport Embassy Suites (great hotel btw) plenty affordable. Still the shuttle is great plus as it's not just an airport shuttle, but an Amtrak and even a South Station and [new]Convention Center shuttle which can save 💸. Both hotels are walking distance to T. Dining is scarce nearby but their are 4-5 gems within a few miles with a vehicle.
But staying is almost always great savings and pleasant if the expectations are lowered. I can't continue to lower my expectations for this location, though. It needs a ton of help or should lose the Hilton branding. It's truly becoming an off-brand product salvaged by great front desk staff no matter how name branding tries to spin it or resort it.
Parking is a major highlight, although many complain for the cost and inconvenience, it is a rare Boston location where large vehicles, trailers, and RV etc could easily park without worry.
Lastly with the price point over the years have come soooo many stories of fights, entire floors wreaking of marijuana, guests failing to checkout because they were arrested, hallway parties, and tons more...all things the hotel cannot control but all things the hotel needs to get under control. And that roof!?! I can only imagine the mold issues that are going to come Fall 2022 on the top floor sans a...
Read moreI am a Hilton Honors Diamond member for many years, and as such I enjoy staying at different properties across Hilton's portfolio whenever I visit a particular city. This Doubletree was an exception, as I've stayed there a couple times before. I chose this because I had been riding the new MBTA Fall River-New Bedford Line on a Sunday, and with JFK/U-Mass as one of the stops, it was a no-brainer to stay here once more given the convenience.||It was hard to tell whether the place was in need of rehab, as there were parts of the hotel that looked to be in fairly decent shape. Everything worked as designed under Doubletree and Hilton policy. I had checked in and chosen my room the day before arrival, and I was able to go directly to that room with my Digital Key. The room appeared to be spacious, with plenty of room for my belongings. Bathroom had ample counter space and there was no issue with hot water.||One warning I have to the potential customer, and this is one that the hotel can't help but it's something important to think about -- is that the property although isolated without many other businesses around, is under the flight path of planes taking off from Logan Airport. For most of my evening, there was constant airport noise that one might not expect since the hotel is south of downtown and the airport is to the northeast.||Others have complained about the lack of proper food service, and this was true back when I stayed there 15-20 years ago, and it's true today as well. The only semblance of food service is a deli in the corner of the lobby with very limited hours. No sit-down restaurant. Nowadays I never starve, given the online/app services that deliver food from nearby restaurants, and that's exactly what I did. Keep in mind that premium Hilton Honors members get a $18 food credit, but for what??? Without a restaurant serving food, and without a buffet breakfast, how would anyone spend said credit? I was told that it's also good in the market store next to the front desk, but I found those pickings to be poor.||Yes this hotel is convenient to both the MBTA Red Line as well as several MBTA commuter rail lines that stop at JFK/U-Mass station. That is about the most this place has going for it, if you arrive without your own...
Read moreI was hesitating between the Holiday Inn Express not too far away, the Hampton Inn and this hotel. I was very happy to have chosen this hotel even though there is no breakfast included. First, the location is great for a cheaper hotel visiting Boston. We were 4, husband, a 4yr old and a newborn. The subway is a short 10min walk away and I never felt that the area was unsafe. Downtown is about 3-4 stops on the same line. We did get off at the previous stop once (Andrew St) to go to the South Bay Mall and I strongly suggest not going along Southampton St. Very sketchy area and I was actually thinking of sending my husband back to the hotel by uber to come pick us and bring us back to the hotel with the car.
The Hampton Inn and the Holiday Inn are both further from a subway station. I had read that the Hampton Inn was in a sketchy area so I canceled it from the equation, and the Holiday Inn Express although the hotel is located in a very nice area (amongst the South Bay Center) the nearest subway which is Andrew St. is aweful and feels unsafe unfortunately. We were actually able to walk back from the mall to the hotel going along Dorchester St., we were told it was safer but it was still a 25-30min walk.
Anyways, to continue with the Doubletree. Check-in was very easy (I went with the digital key with the application), room was clean, air conditioning was blasting when we arrived but or else was working perfectly, and that's what you need! I asked for extra towels when room service was around without any problem (room service only comes if you ask them to come so this is perfect if you don't want to get bothered in the morning). For the price difference versus the other hotels around with breakfast, we were able to get breakfast with DoorDash (McDs, Dunkin', McKenna's deliver) without any problem and costs less than the breakfast at the lobby or the price difference with the other hotels offering breakfast. By the way, the room DOES have a small fridge & coffee machine. My only complaint is the accessible power outlets on the lamps which don't work very well.
Gabby was a doll when our DoorDash forgot to give us our drinks and when we wanted to book an extra night.
I wouldn't hesitate booking this hotel again because of its proximity to the subway, its pricing...
