Gao Vietnamese Kitchen has won my heart over or should I say my stomach..haha If you love Vietnamese food then Gao is a must-visit gem with its authentic and unique cuisine that truly impresses on every level. Each dish we savored at this cute and cozy Dorchester restaurant was a culinary treat and delight, hitting all the right spots, from the lip-smacking banh coun to the addictive chicken and banana blossom salad, every bite was a journey of flavors. The free ice tea added a touch of authenticity to the dining experience as if I were back in Vietnam. The vegetarian pho and fresh spring rolls were exceptional, showcasing the diverse offerings on their extensive menu that’s priced right for the large portions. Moreover, the warm and diligent staff elevated our dining experience, ensuring every detail was perfect. The owner Sy Le was the nicest guy, he really cares about his customers and his employees and it shows! Gao Vietnamese Kitchen is a standout among Vietnamese restaurants, capturing both heart and stomach with its delicious food and exceptional service.

I came back to this spot recently and was pleasantly surprised to see that the menu has expanded with a lot more variety. Their dry noodles is still as good as ever flavorful, well-seasoned, and definitely one of their signature dishes. This time, I decided to try something different and ordered the cháo lòng and mì vịt tiềm, and both were surprisingly just as delicious. The cháo lòng had a comforting, home-style taste, and the mì vịt tiềm had a rich, herbal broth with tender duck. You can tell the kitchen is consistent and skilled everything we tried was cooked with care and tasted great. The drinks here are also worth mentioning. I tried the peach lemongrass tea and the pink guava tea, and both were refreshing and not overly sweet. Overall, the food and drinks were very satisfying, and the prices are quite reasonable for the quality you get.

Just... WOW! The main dishes on the menu here were mostly unfamiliar (which checks out with other reviews that state this is typically home cooking). This was the very best Vietnamese food I've ever had and it makes me wish I lived in the area. Server was extremely courteous and able to give me suggestions based on gluten free and my preferences. The cha gio were to die for, well made, very hot, perfectly rolled, and well filled with meat and vegetables. The fish sauce dipping sauce wasn't watered down. I choose hu tiu suon non as my meal and it was a flavor sensation... rice noodles, different cuts of pork, vegetables, and a wonderful melding of spices. My only challenge was that the spare ribs are bone in, so I had to do a quick Google to figure out the polite way to eat them with my chopsticks. Tldr, if you're in the area, GO HERE.

Ordered takeout for five chicken pho and drove half an hour to pick it up. When I got home, I realized they had given us beef broth instead of chicken. I called to let them know, but they refused to acknowledge the mistake and insisted it was chicken broth — despite the clear difference in flavor and color. When I asked to speak with a manager, I was told none was available, and no solution or apology was offered. Completely disappointing experience, both in quality control and customer service.

Update: Owner offered to follow up and I decided to give the restaurant another chance, without accepting any discount. On the second visit, everything was done right — the chicken pho was flavorful, clean, and exactly what I was hoping for the first time. I’m glad I returned. It showed me that when they get it right, the food is truly worth it. Everyone has off days, and I’m happy to see this...
