Perfect example of a neglected resource in Boston, an absolute shame given the amount of tax revenue that Southie has generated for the city. VERY big, it's great potential is limitless yet lost due to years of neglect/inaction, of some simple, some more costly but needed, improvements. The park includes baseball and softball diamonds galore, used for t-ball, little league AND Babe Ruth baseball, as well as High School and other baseball AND softball leagues. The condition of these fields however are atrocious, and lack the basics that most cities and towns take for granted. The basketball and tennis courts aren't bad but again lack the most basic amenities like bathrooms and water fountains, that can literally save or ruin an experience. A major, pretty much a complete, overhaul of the park WOULD be costly but with the unprecedented jump in tax property revenue directly from the community surrounding the park, also NOT unrealistic. Boston is making many improvements all the time, how about THIS one next? The potential for a beautiful, modern sports and recreation area IS right here waiting for the right people to put...
Read moreI’ve lived close to this park my whole life. I remember the naming ceremony and Mr Joe himself. This is a wonderful resource for the community. Plenty of spaces for baseball, a well maintained track for running, basketball courts and playgrounds. I think the track field is so underused but I’m not complaining as I like to have it to myself.
The playground was renovated recently and looks great for kids. There’s a second one over near the south boston neighborhood house/school but it’s not as nice.
The big, grassy fields are great for walking your dog and biking around.
I’ve always felt safe at this place and don’t worry much. It’s not super-well lit but it’s got some lighting. The roads surrounding it are busy but not high speed roads so it’s alright. As one of our biggest green spaces in Southie/Dorchester, this place is a great place to visit.
The park is in great shape and I think whoever oversees that should be given...
Read moreI grew up going to this park- I am 67yo now. So many great times from the original playground with the great swings, flooding part of the park in winter for ice skating, the stadium area for football games , taking g my kids for soccer/ little league, just playing and picnics..Unfortunately the past few years have not been kind to South Boston and Columbia /Moakley Park as the City of Boston have let the stadium seats decay, do not take care of the grass or walkways, are just letting it go to pot for some horrible plan for the area. The City needs to maintain this once beautiful park and start caring for the people of South Boston instead of walking all over us after taking our ever increasing property tax and other taxes that are supposed to go towards maintaining our parks and playgrounds. The City also needs to start taking care of the other local playgrounds as they too are...
