Hereās the thing: whenever I go to a diner or a breakfast place and I see corned beef hash on the menu, Iām ordering it. Itās how I judge the restaurant. If itās freshly made and tasty I give high marks. If itās canned and looks like dogfood I give it low marks. Unfortunately In House Cafeās hash is the later.
I feel a bit churlish since the menu itself is highly eclectic and it seems to specialize with more of a Mediterranean flair, but they donāt want to be judged on their Irish breakfast, then they shouldnāt offer it on the menu.
That all being said: for canned corned beef hash, it was pretty decent. Toast was offered with white, wheat, and multigrained, and it was fine. The potatoes were think wedges and sparse but nicely seasoned and frankly I think the portions were pretty good. I ate everything and I wouldnāt have wanted more.
I will say, the eggs were uncommonly good. Over easy and JUST how I like them. (Probably loaded with butter but Iām not complaining). I also got a chai latte which was a bit better than average. I tried ordering the lentil soup on the menu, but was informed that all they had was the chicken soup.
The atmosphere of the place is absolutely fantastic, which is sort of incredible because it doubles as a little convenience store as well. But it was bright and friendly and quirky and if I had brought work to do I feel like I could have spent the whole morning there. Service was pleasant if perfunctory.
All in all, I know it sounds like Iām complaining a lot, and I was disappointed by the quality of the corned beef hash, but the rest was quite pleasant. And for being disappointed I walked away full and pretty happy. Iād be curious to...

Ā Ā Ā Read moreTLDR: not everything at this place is halal, yet it's not apparent on the menu.
I ordered an egg dish with corned beef. They happened to have that meat as a canned item in the grocery store that they have in the restaurant. The canned item is NOT halal. I saw the chef go pick it up after I placed my order. I thought this was weird on several levels: (1) this halal restaurant sells a non-halal item in its grocery store; (2) the chef picked up the item which I happened to just order from the menu; (3) this restaurant is using a prepared item instead of cooking it fresh. So I double checked with the waitress if everything is halal. She assured me yes. But I pressed further, mentioning that I saw the chef pick up this canned item, and that this canned item is clearly not halal. So she called the owner, who is Muslim. The owner said that everything is halal, but some times he uses the non-halal item from the grocery store. I complained that you cannot claim to be a halal restaurant and then some times serve non-halal items. He then retorted, "what's the problem?! It's ahl-al-kitab (people of the book)!" I fired back that that is not the expectation when you put halal on your menu! He stormed off. He came back a few minutes later, much calmer now, and showed me the proof of all his halal breakfast meats and apologized.
Due to this breach of trust and compromised halal status, I will not patronize this restaurant again. I do not want to hurt a business with this review, especially a Muslim one. But I feel it my duty to report my experience to prevent other potential diners from eating something that may go against...
