Let me preface my review with the fact that I have frequented this bar since it was called the Catacombs and have always enjoyed it until last night. We had an office Christmas party that migrated to this bar afterwards. The bouncer proceeded to not let in one of our coworkers because “his sweater was too festive”. I kid you not. We decided we would just have 1 drink and leave because they denied service to our coworker. In the 15 minutes it took to try to get drinks ordered the overzealous bartender came from behind the bar and kicked out our Hispanic coworker for touching an orange that was on the bar. It was abundantly clear that this action was targeted because of our coworkers ethnicity. One of our coworkers husbands who is an Assistant District Attorney spoke up about this and was subsequently kicked out as well. It’s very evident that the staff is openly discriminatory and wields the paltry power that they have been given to harass local individuals who aren’t white. It is precisely this type of behavior that gives Boulder the perceived sense of pretentiousness and discrimination that has enveloped our fine city. I can only hope that the establishment’s management reaches out to me as we have all of this shameful spectacle on video which clearly shows the racist intent of these overly aggressive bouncers and bartenders. If you choose to spend your money there then just be warned this is the type of behavior you...

I've found myself in this establishment on several occasions since it replaced the much beloved Catacombs.

on nearly every occasion either myself or a friend are struck at how unfriendly the staff are. On one occasion when attending a special event the staff was actively voicing their disapproval of making a number of free drinks that evening (I happen to know that my friends tipped $2 and $3 respectively on each of their free drinks). This really turned my friends and I off and put a major damper on the evening. We finished our libations and moved along to another establishment from there.

More recently I returned for a get together. Arriving early I was happy to take advantage of the happy hour special (didn't have much flavor but I appreciated the presentation) and truffle fries. As I was the first to arrive from my party I asked two staffers if I might be able to order 2 drinks (one for the guest of honor and one for myself) and neither of them acknowledged my question. When they asked if I wanted to keep a tab open or close the check, I opted to close the check. The truffle fries arrived quickly, looked awesome and were piping hot. Unfortunately they were in much need of salt. As the staff proved neither friendly or approachable I doused each fry in the sauces provided to try to give them some flavor and discussed moving to another venue when the rest of our...

I have come here at least twice a month for the past year. They have never recognized me or treated me well; Always the same cold impersonal service and ridiculously long wait, even though its not busy. I miss catacombs, which used to be a friendly local spot. Bartenders need to remove the muatache wax from their faces and make this a comfortable place to hang out again. I live a few blocks away and I am continuously disappointed with this place. I have worked in the industry for the last 10 years and i know what constitutes proper service. I am writing this review because my last encounter with the bartending staff left me wanting more. The person literally said NO words to me. He poured my drinks extremely slowly and delivered me a bill with ZERO customer interaction. I live so close that i will continue to frequent License No. 1 for pure convienience, although I will do so with a certain level of animosity. I would really appreciate a hometown bar (however kitchy or fancy) that showed any amount of respect to all of their regulars. Boulderado, I know you...

One of my favorite bars. Great drinks and the space is super cozy. Lots of little nooks and crannies to get lost in. Used to be a place called the catacombs which was a fitting name. I recently went to a comedy show with friends and it was just ok. I felt for the price of the show it was lacking. I’ve been to see a couple shows in Denver with bigger comedians for the same price. I felt I had to fake laugh at some do the material. The main person was ok though. I had never had food here before and ordered the calamari which was pretty good. Couldn’t tell if they made it fresh or not but I did like it. Definitely will be back for drinks.

Went into this bar for the first time during happy hour with some coworkers and loved the atmosphere! Very cool lighting and looks like it resembled a real speakeasy. We sat down and got a table and waited and the bartender had to come by and tell us we weren't allowed to sit at the tables and only during the bar (there wasn't any signage or any indication of this). We ordered some drinks and the fries and calamari. The fries were delicious but the calamari was definitely from frozen and very chewy. Overall it had a lot of potential but fell a bit flat from awkward service and mixed quality of food.

This was a very cool experience for a friends birthday get together. They did not have any chartreuse which I was very disappointed about. But the drinks were still relatively unique with good options. The food was not amazing to be honest, calamari was a bit saltier than I’d like but was gluten free which is somewhat rare. The burger itself tasted pretty good but the gluten free bun which is tough to get right was quickly falling apart. I love the setup of the rooms and we had a great time playing pool - you do need some cash for change to make quarters - it’s 4 quarters for each pool game.
