The food is delicious and the atmosphere is great. Service can be a tad iffy at times. They'll offer you cilantro sauce with the empanadas but not tell you it's $0.50. You ask for an egg with waffles, they give you two (and charge for two just to be clear). I wish that they were a little more clear about that kind of stuff.
The food really does make up for it though. Everything is super fresh, well made and seasoned. The empanadas give Division Street Cafe a run for their money. The waffles are proper waffles, not the Belgian ones everyone else has, and it's all just vibrant. The decor is really fun, and the people who work there are friendly. The price can be a bit nuts. Both times I've gone it's cost us $50 to feed two people, with one entree each, a drink for one of us, and a single empanada. That's a lot. The desserts are $10 each which is a bit nuts. I know everyone is charging a lot nowadays, but I don't have to be happy about it.
Edit: Unfortunately I'm downgrading my review due to issues with pricing and being upfront. Went in today, ordered a breakfast burrito and asked for gouda instead of cheddar. Was told "There might be an upcharge" which I thought was silly, but figured "How much can it be, a buck?"
My check comes out with a $3.50 charge. My apple juice was $4.25. They charged me nearly as much as my drink to change my cheese from one common cheese on their menu to another. I'd understand SOME upcharge if it was something "premium" like fresh mozz, or if I was ADDING cheese, but to change the cheese? Insane. When I complained, they took a whole $1.50 off. I told the server he did a fine job, and that I wasn't going to be some jerk and take it out of his tip (which I didn't) but I won't be coming back. They aren't training their staff well enough to be clear about cost, and that's just the most insane upcharge I've ever gotten.
Food is still amazing, but...
Read moreHidden Gem with Amazing Food and Perfect Family Vibes Stumbled upon this place a few days ago and honestly can't stop thinking about it! The Bridgewater Cafe is exactly what you hope to find in a local spot - family-owned, everything made from scratch, and staff who genuinely care.
Their khachapuri (Georgian cheese bread) is incredible - they bring it out hot with a runny egg on top that you mix in yourself. Never had anything like it! We also tried the eggs & fruit platter, chicken bagel, homemade empanadas, and hummus pita. Everything was fresh and you could taste the quality in every bite.
The owner hand-picks ingredients and it shows. The empanadas weren't frozen garbage - flaky, homemade pastry with perfectly seasoned fillings. Even the scrambled eggs were creamy and perfectly cooked.
As parents, this place is a dream. They have an awesome kids area with giant chess and Connect Four that kept our daughter entertained the entire meal. We could actually relax and enjoy our food instead of constantly entertaining her. The July 4th decorations were cute too.
Their cocktails are surprisingly creative - tried a sparkling one with dehydrated orange that was perfectly balanced. Not too sweet, great with the rich breakfast food.
This is the kind of neighborhood spot every area needs. Great food, reasonable prices, super friendly staff, and they clearly put love into everything they make. Already planning our next visit!
Pro tip: Get the khachapuri - it's their specialty and absolutely worth trying even if Georgian food isn't your usual thing. Visited weekend morning, family of 3. No wait but probably smart to go early...
Read moreWhen we first walked in, we were kind of just standing around for a solid 15 minutes before anyone even noticed us to seat us. And when someone finally did come over, there was this awkward confusion about who was actually there first, even though the other family waiting totally said we were up before them. Once we got to our table and ordered, I was really looking forward to trying one of their special coffees, but it didn’t show up until long after we’d started on our meal.
Don’t get me wrong, the food was delicious, but it felt a bit pricey for the amount we got.
But what really caught my eye was how they handle tips. They automatically add a 20% gratuity, right, but then at the bottom of the receipt, they suggest additional tip amounts based on the total bill, which already includes that gratuity. If I hadn’t been paying attention, I could have ended up tipping twice. It just seems a bit sneaky to me, like they’re trying to get more out of their customers. When I asked our server about the automatic tip, she mentioned it gets shared among all the staff, which makes you kind of feel bad and might tempt you to tip extra on top of...
