Waypoint 622 Restaurant has my original review posted ( prior to COVID & the opening of Waterman's) as one of the top 4 on their website. Unfortunately my new review is definitely not a positive one. I chose this restaurant for my birthday, on August 8, 2022, because I considered it one of the finest in the area. We always dressed for the celebration, a sports jacket for my husband & I wore a new dress . We expected the usual beautiful tables adorned with candle light, waiters well groomed in black shirts , and a menu with a variety of gourmet meals. It was high end price wise but worth every penny. This experience, what a shock!
We have had lunch in the patio area in the past, so knew that was available. We were told they did not take reservations & now I understood why. We walked into a room that looked like it would after closing due to the bare tables. There were black tablecloths, no centerpiece, no flatware or napkins on the table. We did see four upside down water glasses, that's it. The waitress told us to pick a table---there was only one additional family seated when we arrived. I looked into the restaurant and saw a ghost town of empty tables--what happened? Our waitress told us they only cater to the bar scene outside- Music Bingo , etc. Why didn't they tell us when we called? A beautiful establishment was now another typical Jersey Shore dive. We ordered drinks & waited for menus. The menu was very limited but we thought we would give it a chance as I had read about the chef on their website.. I ordered a chopped salad as my appetizer with the sirloin & scallop dinner. My husband ordered the Waypoint Wedge salad with the tuna special. Within 10 minutes a young waiter appeared with salads and dinners on hand...we didn't even start to enjoy our cocktails! The waiter looked at me as if he had no clue why we were surprised.. We told our waitress to return the meals. I should have known better, we received the same meals, they were just warmed again. The sirloin was rubbery. What they called Bearnaise sauce was a runny liquid, and the scallops were semi-raw. My husband described his tuna as "ok" and only ate part of it. The meals did have a nice presentation, but no flavor. The only part of the meal with appeal was the chopped salad and the white chocolate tartofo we shared for dessert. The waitress said it was store bought but was worth trying. The tartofo was very tasty.
At the advice of our waitress we strolled over to the Pig & Parrot for an after-dinner drink. It was a wonderful suggestion except she failed to tell us the valet parking lot would be closed when we returned. The valet key was locked inside . The police called the manager who knew we had a 1 hour ride, but would not come back to help. We had to Uber home at the cost of $78. then drive back again to pick up our car so it wouldn't be towed. The next morning we had to drive back & pick up our key.
My birthday was a memorable one, we ate in what looked like Waypoint's basement with mediocre food. We even requested to speak to the chef but he never came to our table. The only reason i even gave it a 1 star rating was because my Aperol Spritz was well made & we had a sweet waitress. Obviously we do not plan to return but wanted to warn others that may be looking for a nice place for dinner. This is not the place, it's over priced & a big disappointment....
Read moreAs a local, we’ve been here a few times but I’ve never felt strongly enough about the restaurant either way to write a review about it. Tonight, however, we ran into a little issue with the new manager Jorge.
My girlfriend and I arrived for her birthday dinner as the first two people of a party of nine. As a policy, we were told that there’s no waiting list or reservations and they’re not able to hold any tables while you’re waiting for the rest of your party. All well and good there — the other seven people arrived and we were promptly seated on the overflow terrace.
Here’s where the problem occurred. It was over ninety degrees outside and we were sat in the corner of the terrace behind some tall foliage which blocked what little breeze there was. There was another table about twenty feet away that was empty with no parties waiting, so we asked to switch so we could be a little cooler while eating. The hostess at the hostess stand said she had to check with the manager if we could switch tables even though we weren’t even seated yet and nothing had been brought to the table.
A few minutes later, the manager Jorge comes over and says, “I heard you had a question about the table.” We repeated our request to switch tables since there were no parties waiting to sit down. Rather than apologize or make any sort of concession, he rudely stated that they were holding that table for a party of fourteen and that we couldn’t move. When we told him that we were just told by the hostess that they don’t hold tables as a policy, he became standoffish and vaguely pointed to the parking lot stating, “the party is coming right now so we can’t move you”.
The other party did not arrive for forty minutes after that conversation. Forty minutes.
Additionally, Jorge tried to pass the buck off onto the owner as if that would make it appropriate to look a customer in the face and lie to them. If I was the owner of Point 622, I would have a chat with Jorge about his glaring lack of customer service skills.
On to the food and service. If you do end up dining here, ask for Billy Joe to be your waitress. She was kind, attentive and it was an overall pleasure to be served by her. She radiated positivity and good energy, which is not easy to do while waitressing in a mask in ninety degree heat. Get that woman a raise!
While not a stiff pour, the Garden State Lemonade was a delicious and refreshing cocktail.
The tuna tartare was a little bland but not terrible. The portion size was great but the tuna itself was barely seasoned so you have to make sure to get some of the sauce on the plate with every bite.
It was too hot for a real entree, so I went with the seafood cocktail ($26) which was small but fresh and very tasty.
I finished with a tiramisu which was quite nice — I’d recommend that to anyone who dines here and loves a quality tiramisu.
Unfortunately, while Billy Joe was an incredible waitress and the food was fairly decent, the negatives outweighed the positives here for us. It’s a shame that a rude manager with an attitude problem detracted from what was otherwise a good birthday dinner. We will mosbe taking our business elsewhere...
Read moreAt this restaurant, the customer is NEVER right. Especially if JOANNE is your server. The most unprofessional, condescending and immature middle aged waitress I have ever met. I called ahead to check if there was a wait and I was told there was not, and we could be seated right away. By that, the restaurant meant they had empty tables and we would wait 20 minutes before even being served water. When we did get drinks, we were disappointed to find out that out of 3 of our meal orders could not be accommodated because they had already “ran out”. Once we finally ordered, we waited over an hour before asking if the food would be much longer. The waitress, Joanne, immediately responded with a connescending attitude to my 75 year old grandmother. Instead of responding apologetically and just offering to check on the meal, Joanne mocked my grandma with a “whiney” tone and blamed it on the restaurant being “swamped” when there were only 5 full tables of people in the entire restaurant. Once the meal did come, Joanne’s attitude only progressed. She no longer respnded to any of my family member’s requests with respect, she stopped saying “you’re welcome” altogether, and never came back to check how our meal was or if we needed anything else. When it came time to ask if anyone wanted anything wrapped, Joanne would not even ask my grandma if she wanted her plate (which was still full of food) wrapped to take home. When my grandma asked if she could have her meal wrapped, Joanne was so immature that she sent to hostess over to grab and wrap my grandma’s plate. We asked the hostess why she came over to grab the plate and she responded that Joanne had asked her to do so, so that she did not have to come back to our table. We asked to speak to the manager to explain our disappointment in the customer service of the wait staff and we were met with more defensive excuses from him rather than apologies. After the manager went to speak to Joanne, she came back to our table to throw what can only be described as a childish temper tantrum before running over to the hostess to gossip about us while we were sitting five feet away. If waiting 2+ hours for your back up meal choice on the menu, getting mocked by the wait staff and and being whispered about like you’re in high school is your idea of a good time, head on over to Waypoint for that “ideal”...
