As a native So Cali girl who grew up loving good Mexican food, one of my earliest missions when I moved to this state nearly three decades ago was finding a decent Mexican spot (or 12–more is better). It was a fairly impossible quest back then here in central CT, though over the decades, we’ve gotten an influx of decent Latin food of various stripes that have left me with some ways to sate those cravings. Yet, in spite of that, I could never find a couple of my So Cali favs done right or at all, and it was a sad, sad thing.
Well, no longer! Guac N Roll to the rescue!
One of my favorite things I simply could not find here was a good, fresh fried hard shell beef barbacoa taco. Like anywhere. Nowhere does this. Even at reasonably decent places, a hard shell taco would be that crappy premade garbage. Yuck.
My biggest primary draw to Guac N Roll was that they had this in the menu, so I tried these and HOLY SMOKES~
Guac and Roll does it RIGHT. Their supreme hard barbacoa taco is—really apex. I mean it. Moist, flavorful shredded beef, fresh, well arranged toppings, perfectly done, fresh, hard fried corn tortilla—As good as any taco of this style I’ve ever had back home. Angels sang, it was amazing. My husband got the same thing and loved it so much he repeated it tonight. Do yourself a favor and try the supreme barbacoa tacos, preferably with a side of guac to slather on, and prepare for eating bliss~
Tonight, since they had another long time back home fav—proper fried fish or shrimp tacos—I went with the shrimp, and my woooord, these were just fantastic. Just as good as anything back home. Squeeze of lime, a little hot sauce, and the party in my mouth was slamming. I intend to try the fish version soon because these were just hella yum.
Actually, I intend to try a lot of things since they’re doing things so right. Their tree leches cake was also good, and their salsa is yum and chips fresh. I keep eyeballing the pozole—another uncommon dish here that I love when done well—so that might actually get my third try spot—jury’s out. I’m pretty sure anything I try here will be fantastic at this point.
Online ordering would be a huge plus, but I have nothing but praise so far for this outstanding new place right in the heart of Bristol. Please give it a go—you...
Read moreIm in pain. I ate a burrito that weighed the same as a newborn child. Am i ashamed? No. Will i regret it...time will tell if you catch my drift.
I ordered a burrito that was supposed to come with mole. They informed me they were out of mole. So the cook came out, recognized that i was a proud fat man and said to me, We dont have any mole...but how about nacho cheese on top. I was like, i like it when you talk dirty to me. So he says, and how about we deep fry it...and i said, you had me a nacho....cheese. Fry me up big boy. And so he did. And presented me with a catering sized plate of rice, beans, and a 6lb 3 oz burrito child. It was delicious, and now i am in pain. I also tried their horchata...not a fan. Usually it has a cinnamon flavor, maybe nutmeg or something along those lines. This had a weird melon flavor to it. I wasnt expecting it.
Anyways, everyone was really nice. I almost didnt want to try it because the burrito was 16 bucks but after getting it, i can definitely say they give you what you pay for.
I was offered a green sauce for the burrito but i knew it was a trap. I would like to see an option for sauces, perhaps a mild salsa, or a cholulha or tapatio to go.
Great place. Ill be back when im...
Read moreFriendly staff, very clean, a tad small but very nice. I wish I could give it 5 stars but unfortunately can’t. Ordered a couple of things for my family, Tlayuda Campechana, Carnitas Burrito, Milanesa Torta, Pork pozole (soup) and 1 Taco al Pastor. My husband loved his Tlayuda. Ordered a burrito for my little ones to share which I took a bite of it was pretty good but $17.50 for a regular sized burrito with just rice beans cheese and pork is a bit excessive IMO. My daughter seemed to enjoy her torta. The taco was ok a bit on the dry side but both my husband and I didn’t really care for it. Unfortunately what I was mostly looking forward to trying was almost inedible. The pozole had an amazing flavor but it was sooo over salted I couldn’t eat it which was a real shame because as mentioned it had very good flavor and I typically enjoy things on the saltier side but this was over the top. The other disappointment was the fact that no cabbage or any toppings for the pozole were included which it traditionally includes. A few limes radishes and cabbage would of probably helped balance out the salt. Overall the service was great and I look forward to giving them a second chance...
