So, I used to LOVE Shipley's Do-Nuts but I've recently become slightly disenchanted with them and these are my reasons why: First of all, I used to wake up early and travel many miles past many places that sold fountain drinks just to get a Diet Coke from Shipley's. I don't know why, but they were amazing. Well, they've switched to Pepsi. Diet Pepsi is NOT Diet Coke. Also, the last three times I bought donuts from Shipley's, the iced donuts had a disgusting amount of icing on them- and I have a big sweet tooth but this was unedible. The people that work there- or rather "some" of the people (to be fair) I guess are just dull. I asked a question and two employees just stared at me. They didn't indicate to me that they couldn't hear or understand me, they just didn't respond. I repeated the question just in case they didn't at all hear me, then they stared at each other until I just gave up and told them " nevermind". That question, by the way, was " Are the donuts back to being iced the normal amount, because the last 2 times they had way too much icing and I couldn't eat them". Well, the answer would've been NO- They still are grossly over-iced but they didn't answer me. Anyway, Shipley's still has a place in my heart but with all the extra sugar there's no place for them in my hips or my pancreas.
Oh- to be fair-Shipley's quit carrying Coca Cola 12 years ago, I remember the first time I walked into the other Bryan location and found this out. Still, everytime I go I'm bummed out by this. But people don't go to Shipley's for a good Diet Coke, they go for the best donuts in town and that's what...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreSeems like everytime we go dies not matter what time they are always out of something . Even when the bakers are still there. Supposedly they leave at 10a but have been there when they have left at 915a . Now when a donut place runs out if do nut holes before 10am that is crazy. I have been going to Shipleys since the 50s. On North Main in Houston and Little York never seemed to ever have that issue there. I know the logic in what they do. If they are out of what you want you will settle for something else since you are there, but settling is not a good experience for the customers. But they will sell their inventory, even if the customer is not...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreDecidedly less than wonderful. The staff are delightful. The place is bright, spotlessly clean and cheerful.
Letās start with the sausage kolache. As others have said, maybe too much bread to meat ratio. A pinky sized sausage in a large hot-dog bun sizes roll. Would you enjoy a meat stick in a hotdog bun?
The FLAVOR of the kolache is excellent.
Now the sadā¦. The Apple fritter. It was this large fat blob. No discernible apple bits. No distinct cinnamon flavor. No crispy outside and chewy insides like several of my favorite Shipley locations. I couldnāt eat more than second bite.
Just a rather unpleasant burnt-oil flavor...
