Lots of great reviews on here and also a strong recommendation from the staff at our hotel, but if I'm being totally honest, I was a bit disappointed. We got there at around 11:30 on a Sunday morning and were told that there would be about a half hour wait. I wouldn’t have thought any of it if it weren’t for the fact that there were more than a few empty tables…I guess the kitchen was backed up. Not a big deal, considering I sort of expected a wait.
Anyways, our hostess was super-friendly and good enough to hold our spot even though I hadn’t gotten back from picking up our car (long story) and they require everyone in the party to be there before being seated (which I don’t remember ever happening to me before but again, no big deal in the end).
Also on the plus side is the fact that it’s a really nice looking place with great ambiance, in a nice looking area. On the downside, I was fairly unimpressed with both the food and the service. I’m always going to give a wide berth to a popular breakfast spot on a Sunday morning but even with that in consideration, the service was a bit on the pokey side. Even more egregious, I don’t think our waitress smiled at us even once nor made any other attempt at being at all engaging. She may have been having a bad day but still, it sticks out as some of the surliest service I’ve had in a good while.
As for the food, my wife enjoyed her Smoked Salmon Benedict but I was really not a fan of the Breakfast Burrito at all. The thing seemed to be mostly tortilla and onions with perhaps one small egg in there somewhere. Even salsa, hot sauce and sour cream did little to help. Just as bad were the home fries. They appeared to have doused with oil and were not especially well seasoned. Again, they were quite liberally tossed with onions…I’m someone who likes onions, but this was really too much. Needless to say, I didn’t finish my meal and this was after night of bar hopping when I really needed a good breakfast. Yikes.
I really, really wanted to like Betty’s but the only thing saving it from a two-star review is the décor, the lovely hostess and that my wife didn’t find it nearly as...
Read moreI wish that the locals and patrons awarding this spot five stars could just get out more and see what truly five star spots can be like- and it has nothing to do with cost or locale. Went here on a whim after googling simply "best breakfast buffalo" and this being near the top. The reason I'm awarding two stars and not one, is because the spot itself is very charming, and the gravy in what I ordered (the biscuits and gravy) wasn't as inedible as some of the rest of the stuff we got- but far, far, from the best gravy I've had, to be clear. Most everything here was completely unspectacular, lacklustre, not much higher than generic cafeteria breakfasts I've had. The reason I say "most everything" is because one thing we ordered was in fact spectacular... in how awful it was... and that was the spinach/tomato/feta omelette they had on special. Oh gosh, no words can begin to articulate how bad this was... I don't know if the eggs they used were somehow off, or if there was some seasoning thrown in which didn't agree with us, but my travel companion couldn't handle more than a bite (despite her ordering it), and thinking she was exaggerating how bad it was, I ended up finishing off as much of it as I could... but yeah, that stuff was vile. The side potatoes/hash the seem to pile with any breakfast item could definitely use some finessing... less burnt please (yes, I'm aware what hash is). And your eggs... look to better producers/suppliers please? The butternut squash soup as well was a perfect cup of culinary forgetfulness, thickened beyond reason. I thought of a couple I know who'd love the vibe of this place-- and I know they've often tolerated mediocre food for vibe/aesthetic--, but I cannot in good faith send them here. I am just struggling to reconcile how this spot has 4.5 stars after what I experienced. Granted, my sample size of their menu was limited to just three items... maybe some things are (much, much) better, but I don't intend on going back...
Read moreA gorgeous Saturday evening dinner with my hubby where we were able to dine on the patio. Surprisingly no bugs and just the perfect end of summer evening, actually September. My husband made reservations for 7 PM on the patio. When we arrived on time, the very rude hostess, I think her name was Kelly maybe, told us it would be a few minutes. OK, it did not look very busy, in fact we could see the room to the right with several open tables, but OK, we can wait a few minutes. At least 15 minutes later, she finally came and took us to our table on the patio. The tables are kind of close to each other but I get it, needs to be like that because more people can sit out on the patio then. So, we started with something called spicy tots or something like that. They were basically just tater tots with a spicy dressing on top of them! Totally not worth the $7 or so charge for them! I had the grilled salmon salad. It was just OK, the salmon was a bit overcooked but just your basic salad with avocado, tomatoes, carrot, etc. My husband had, I believe it was a Moroccan stew., which he thoroughly enjoyed and said was quite filling. Our cocktails were good as well. Restroom was very clean. My complaint with Betty's this time was the very rude hostess, apparently for no reason other than a bad day or bad mood in general?! Also, our waitress was very INATTENTIVE. Our waiting time to get our order in, drinks, the appetizers and of course our meal was outrageous. I'm talking like 15-20+ minutes in between each step. We were there for almost 3 hours!! Good thing we weren't planning on going to the movies or something else afterwards because we would have never made it. We usually enjoy Betty's but this visit was very disappointing and my husband stated it will be a very long time before he would...
