Applebee's Grill + Bar — Restaurant in Burlington

Our waitress did a super job. We had to return one dish due to quality preparation not as we ordered. Bourbon street steak was well done and was ordered medium rare. The replacment plate arrived. Was not a Bourbon street steak. (My husband orders this steak, 90% of the time, so he knows the look and flavor), although the preparation was correct as mid rare, it was not the Bourbon street, by this time he did not want to wait for a third one to hopefully get the right food and preparation. My meal was not complete when delivered. The waitress said the rest would be brought out. It finally arrived about five minutes prior to us leaving. Only after we reminded her we had not received it yet. The staff had informed her that they had delivered it to us and it was pretty obvious.There were no extra plates other than what she had originally brought out. She apologized up and down. And then had to retrieve it herself. We tipped her as she did a great job. Even though the kitchen was off she was not. Although the poor young lady was probably pretty frustrated at this point.

In the last few years and we've been going to this restaurant for more than twenty years, and we do not live in the community. We travel there normally for special events. Lately we have come to realize that the only consistency we see is inconsistency. Either the food is great and the waitress or the server not so good or vice versa. If the restaurant had been super busy, we would have taken that into consideration. Unfortunately they weren't even half capacity. It did appeare that there was plenty of staff available. We ate at Applebee's in Burlington Iowa yesterday the service was horrible. We got seated, knew what we wanted to eat when we gave our drink order, so ordered right then. Got our food wasn't very hot, then said she would be out with our coleslaw the cook was preparing it. Must still be doing it because we never got our slaw. Then asked for a drink refill and our waitress disappeared had to get the guy seating people to get us more to drink. Then we had the all you can eat meal and wanted more and had to wait until she appeared. Then my boyfriend went to restroom and I asked for our check and a to go container and she diappeared again. He came back and we waited for what seemed like an eternity til we saw and her again and explained we wanted to leave we had things to do and we needed our check. She went and got it but no to go box. We had to wait for her to go get it. It would have been different if place was busy but it wasn't. For service I give that place -5 stars. She needs to be retrained in customer service. Also it looked a bit tacky that she was wearing her sunglasses atop her head while waiting on people, made me feel like she just couldn't wait to get out of there. Also before I wrote this review I tried to call and speak to a manager and on the order line and the line to talk to someone there, each line would ring twice and say good bye and hang up. Our waitress was friendly enough, but didn't refill our drinks and brought out our food too late. Also, you could tell she was overwhelmed. The food was cold and cooked incorrectly, specifically the steak that someone at my table ordered. The mushrooms on my bourbon street chicken were way over salted. It was like biting into a can of salt. The place (like all Applebee's) is in dire need of an update. Yes, it was clean, but you can definitely see the wear and tear on the booths, tables, and even behind the bar. Speaking of the bar, I witnessed the bartender pour a beer incorrectly, it looked like a Guinness. You're supposed to tilt the glass and pour the beer on the side, not straight into the glass. This does make a difference in not only the taste of the beer, but how the gasses and flavor are released when it's poured correctly vs incorrectly. I can't bring myself to give only one star because, like I said, our waitress was friendly and brought us what we asked. However, we had to ask. Even in busy/overwhelmed establishments, waiters and waitresses are normally on top of their game when trained properly.
