We went on Valentine's Day for late lunch/ early dinner to beat the crowds. The place was pretty empty. I didn't care too much for the seating arrangement. They sat us close to a doorway that the staff frequent, so it wasn't very private. There was always someone walking by. Even though there seemed to be a lot of staff, service was a bit slow. It took a while for them to take our order, I even had to let someone know we were ready to order. However, they were quick and attentive when bringing chips and salsa and bean dip. They were also very nice and polite. The chips weren't warm or fresh, but not stale either. The salsa was really good, probably the best I had from a Mexican restaurant! I did not like the bean dip. It has a taste of allspice or nutmeg that I really don't like (the bean dip taste the same as all the others I've tried at other restaurants), but my husband liked it. It was just the two of us, and our meals took a long time to prepare, longer than any other restaurant we've been to, which was weird since the place was pretty empty. That being said, the food was really good! Maybe that's why it takes so long, lol. I got the number 12, Taco, enchilada, and Chile Relleno plate. It was so much food, and I had a lot of leftovers, but since I've never been, I wanted to try a variety of what they offer. I really liked everything. My husband ordered the Carne Tampequena (not sure of the spelling) it was meat and veggies wrapped in bacon. He liked it but said he would order something different next time. We also ordered the fried ice cream, I never had fried ice cream, so I don't know how it's supposed to taste, but it was so chewy and hard to eat! It seemed like they pre-make it and keep it in the freezer, based on the taste and texture. It's definitely not something I would order again. But they made it look very pretty and appetizing! Even though service wasn't the best, we still left a big tip, it was Valentine's Day after all! All in all we will go back again, especially since we...
Read moreOrdered food to-go tonight. Only reason I'm giving two stars is because my dad, mom and son enjoyed their meals, although my mom and son's plate were hardly luke warm. 1st issue, they don't allow you to order kid's meals over the phone... What the hell could be the reason for that?!? 2nd issue, you have to pay $4.75 for chips and salsa if you're having it to go.... Well whenever I've ate inside the restaurant, the chips always come with the meal. Matter of fact every Mexican restaurant/shop gives you a bag of chips to go. Well not Don Juan's. Their reason, "the owners make us because the food is cheaper to go." Well we spent $50 tonight on dinner, chips would have been nice to have along with the salsa they CHARGED US FOR. 3rd issue, my bean and cheese burrito with enchilada (red) sauce, tasted HORRIBLE. That is my go to dish at every restaraunt and I devour it. It was almost cold, nowhere near warm or hot like any Mexican meal should be. And the tortilla was quite soggy, I understand I had it with enchilada sauce but I've never had a soggy tortilla when I've ordered this meal in the past. I think we should have picked up the food in 5 minutes, not the 15 they suggested because the food was made quickly then just sat there to cool and sog up! Owners, throw chips and salsa in for free don't be so damn cheap. Even the smallest of taco shops give free chips and you have one of the busiest restaurants in QH. Appreciate the customer a bit more and take pride in your food and service. We have eaten there on more than one occasion and have decided after tonight, we will not be dining in or taking out ever again. Cold, soggy food and $5 chips is a joke, step...
Read moreNice spot in kind of the heart of Quartz Hill. Accessible directly from 50th. Parking in the back is no problem.
Clean and fresh as soon as you walk in the place feels inviting. We were a party of 3 at 12:30 on Saturday afternoon. Plenty busy, but we were seated immediately. Drunk order taken as we were seated and brought very promptly.
Most surrounding tables were full. But service was really a noticeable focus.
Ordered the Carnitas plate. Far more food than one can eat in a sitting. The carnitas was well prepared not greasy. Very flavorful and tender. No noticeable fat which is really a plus. Served with Pico de Gallo y guacamole Corn tortillas, refried beans and Spanish rice. The rice was excellent. Beans fairly standard but did compliment the dish.
The carnitas enchiladas were delicious same accompaniment of sides. My son lives for enchiladas, normally pollo however he also loves carnitas. So that was a no brainer and it worked out A O K.
The other dish was Camarones de Vera Cruz and it was also delicious.
We each had enough to have dinner later. Great experience.
Oh wait I forgot the Albondigas soup!!! I mean if you have to have salad get a salad but the Albondigas (meatball soup) is perfect. Really flavorful and warm and soothing. Lol
I'm sorry no pictures. I'm not one to take pics of food. Maybe soon.
Anyway, great spot excellent service great food. Reasonable pricing. No hesitation...
