Brown Skin Coffee Roaster — Restaurant in Calumet Township

If i could leave ZERO STARS. I would . this will be the last time i come here . First time I attempted to come they were “closed” till 1 for whatever reason. Second time coming I CALLED before coming asking if they were open the lady said yes . I asked if they were taking any breaks like yesterday and the lady again said “ we are opened” . I do not live exactly right by this place AT ALL. I came up there and she proceeded to tell me the kitchen was Closed and all i could get was a drink …. so obviously you guys are not actually opened ….?? not to mention there was nowhere to sit as a whole meeting was taking place in not sure why that wouldn’t be something she would’ve said otp. I had to leave and just go all the way back home . this is so frustrating and unprofessional.

Based on the response underneath i’m gonna update this post . I can swear on everything I called and you never said anything about a private event . it’s okay to take accountability kinda weird you’re openly lying when i had someone sitting next to me hearing the call 🤣. no one came in w negative energy but how would you feel when you just drove almost 20 minutes to be told the kitchen is closed and you can only get drinks … and won’t be back open 2 . not to mention yes ITS A PRIVATE EVENT ???? i would’ve expected to be told that when i asked what was going on that day …….. there was no where to sit and I came to conduct business where i would’ve needed to have conversation how can you do that when the whole room is silent listening to one speaker so obviously i would’ve have to get a drink and be quiet …. just close the shop till the event is over again just unprofessional and lying openingly is really a bad look for you...

I LOVE that there is a wonderful space in Gary, Indiana for coffee, drinks and fellowship. This place is amazing and everyone should check it out. They rotate coffees and I have a nice mix of pastries and food options. They offer wine (but sadly, no beer that I know of) and I have had there food before and wish I could give it 4.5 stars as it's quite nice for lunch. It COULD be better - I say this because while everything can grow and improve, it's primarily that when I hold something to a higher standard I do expect 100%. Brown Skin Coffee is not PERFECT, but I am bougie coffee drinker and what prompted me to write this today is that I did not have a great cup of plain, black coffee. In fact, my coffee tasted sort of burnt. That said - I need no refund, and I will be returning. I leave ONLY POSITIVITY via this forum, as I plan on reaching out to the manager/owner to provide my feedback on how this place can be even better (and to inquire about how they store their coffee once brewed). The worker was lovely and again it's not on her, rather, this feedback is because I want this place to THRIVE. This is a place everyone needs to check out. As I was raised down the street and now live in a neighborhood that does NOT have a coffee shop or locale like Brown Skin Coffee, I will PRAISE and be PLEASED that something like this simply exists for all to visit. Take my money, because local businesses need it more, and this place...

I was excited to finally get around to checking out this new establishment only to be let down. My cousin and I stood at the counter for a few minutes before anyone acknowledged us……they weren’t very welcoming either. We were finally acknowledged and proceeded to order, with a very limited menu selection we were told they were out of chicken & waffles and had no decaffeinated coffee. I thought how do you not have decaffeinated coffee….it is a coffee shop right! We ended up ordering the croissant sandwiches and regular coffee and grits. As we waited one young lady swept the rug stirring up dirt next to where we were seated, she proceeded to sweep the floors and decided it was a good idea to sweep under the table as we sat there sweep over my cousins foot. Like where is the common sense?? Service was very slow and since it was only 4 customers I didn’t understand why it took so long. Finally we received our sandwiches they were not hot our drinks didn’t come until after our meal and one was made wrong. And the grits well they never came. I asked for my card to be refunded and was told they were coming. At this point I no longer wanted them! The staff need to be retrained and work on their customer service skills! Needless to say we won’t be back...
