Ken Oringer and Jamie Bissonnette's latest creation is an overwhelming success. Living up to the reputation of Toro and Coppa, everything about Little Donkey was executed perfectly, from service, to the atmosphere to the incredible food.
Little Donkey is a much larger, more spacious space then Toro or Coppa. Even on a Saturday at 7:30 when the restaurant was paced, noise levels were low enough that you can converse with your table without yelling to each other. The staff was all very friendly and knowledgeable, providing in depth food and drink recommendations. Similar to Toro, the cocktails here are creative, inspired and delicious. My table ordered The Donkey Punch (which comes in a grapefruit cup), two Soeur De Luca's (which were like a mix between a Mojito and a gin and tonic, very refreshing), and a beer.
There were four of us and we ordered 2 dishes a piece and 2 desserts to split. We ordered the Parker House Rolls, which were delicious and reminded us somewhat of bao bread, highly recommended. The fried chicken sandwich was also very good, though it was a bit difficult to split between four people. The Manti was the table's favorite dish. Everyone found the flavor to be exceptional. Our only (very minor) complaint was the dish came with 7 ravioli, so we had to fight over who only got 1! We enjoyed the clam garlic bread, though we were not blown away by it, especially compared to the Manti. The charred avocado, cucumber salad, and silver queen corn were all hits. The corn also had the cool effect of parts of it still moving when brought to the table. The burger was also a very solid choice. The patty itself was done perfectly, but the real star was the buffalo pickles!
For dessert with got the mango ritz crackers (which actually was mango between ritz brand crackers!) and the cookie dough (my favorite), which was served very creatively on a beater whisk, giving you the feeling of being a kid again and eating the cookie dough when Mom wasn't looking.
Overall we all had nothing but glowing, positive things to say about Little Donkey. We all agreed that we will go back, that we will bring visiting friends and family back, and that we're all very excited to see the breakfast and...
Read moreThis is a must try spot! I went here for Father’s Day and Glad I did. We arrived at 2:00 PM and had reservations for 2:30 PM. We were greeted by the staff soon as we entered the establishment. We choose to sit at the bar where the bartender was making a drink but focused on our arrival. Greeting us and ready to take our order. The cocktails are infused with different ingredients depending on the mood you are in. We each picked a different drink but tasted each other’s and each was just as good as the other. The bartender was polite, outgoing and very interactive with each person sitting at the bar. Making sure everyone was attended to. 15 mins later we the hostess approached us by our name and stated our table was ready whenever we were ready to be seated. She also assured us the waitress would transfer our items to our table and she did just that. As she approached us she introduced herself as our waitress and asked if we needed assistance? He took her up on the offer and transferred to our table. It just got better and better as time went on. She was really outgoing, kind and courteous. She asked if we needed anything or questions be sure to ask? Once again we took her up on the offer and she was a great help once again. My friend and I ordered the hash plate, our other guess ordered the chicken sandwich, and the French Toast plate. Each was perfect. The Hash plates has plenty of Hash, Potatoes and one egg with Wheat Toast. Cooked perfect and very tasty. The Chicken Sandwich was cooked to perfection and very tasty on a bun. The French Toast was cooked just right with Fresh Fruit on Top. At the end we decided on desert we all agreed on the Cookie Dough Desert and Once again a shocker It was just that a plate with Fresh Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough with the beater that they whipped it up with accompanying it on the plate was an eye opener. The Dough was perfectly whipped and very good. Between the staff and food how could one complain? Thank You to each staff member who we came into contact with for the Professional, Kind and Beautiful Experience on Father’s Day!...
Read moreBest of the new restaurants in the Harvard Square/Central Square area. To start, the drinks are fantastic. Thave a lot of depth to them, no one ingredient overpowers the others. Each has a unique and interesting combination of flavors, sometimes quite subtle, that always refrains from being smothered or overpowered by it's constituent liquors or liqueurs. A very nice assortment.
The oysters are pretty great, even by New England standards. Although the selection might be smaller than other locations it does seem to be much more curated, so I found myself pretty well satisfied by what was offered, even if it was a more limited selection than other restaurants across the river might have.
The vast majority of the menu is composed of small plates, which are each pretty unique. Although you might find individual components repeated a couple of times across the menu, as in the case of the foie gras, each dish is different enough to more than justify an ingredient's repetition. I was very pleased by the tartare, topped with an almost crispy grated horseraddish, which I thought was easily one of the better tartares in Boston. The foie gras poêlé (which, let's face it, beats the pants out of the chalky pasty torchon most places serve) was also fantastic, if perhaps just a bit too charred for my tastes. The torched avocado was also very good, and I thought it was a particularly nice pairing for the earlier tartare.
The deserts also seemed very nice. I particularly enjoyed the cookie dough, which had a very unique presentation. It was almost humorously nostalgic, nestled inside the branches of a mixer's metal prongs, like you're a kid eating the excess smeared on the mixer. All that could complete the effect would be the burnt flour electric gearbox smell of an old mixer.
All in all I think it's the best new restaurant in the area, and I really look forward to trying more. I also look forward to a rotation in the drink menu, I've about cleared it out and so far it's all...
