We discovered this place only a few months ago and we loved it when we first tried it. We recently went back after leaving the area for a few months and were disappointed by a few things. We went once with friends and the fries were cold and stale. We figured they might have been busy and gave them the benefit of the doubt. We went back again - the fries were equally cold and stale, the "clam" chowder was really gross, thick, and grey with almost no oyster mushrooms at all. We also didn't recognize any of the staff and noticed that our waitress wasn't that friendly or helpful and didn't really fill up our glasses. It was a much different experience than the first few times we went a few months ago. On top of that, there's a bunch of misinformation being pushed by the restaurant owner about Question 5. The owner has put up signs, posters and pins all over the restaurant saying that tipped staff totally opposes Question 5 and that it's bad for workers and pushed by special interests. To be clear, every city that has introduced a law to raise minimum wage for their tipped staff (San Francisco, Seattle etc.), has seen the staff paid 20% more on average than tipped staff in other parts of the country without a similar law and they are generally happier knowing they have stable income so they can, you know, pay bills and stuff. Also, this doesn't force tipped staff to pool tips and this doesn't mean customers will stop tipping (it didn't happen in other parts of the country where bills like this were introduced). Question 5 is a bill proposed by labor advocacy groups that try to help workers. The only people that oppose these bills are greedy business owners that claim they can't run a business without paying their staff slave wages. So, despite supposedly being a progressive vegetarian restaurant, it seems like the owner cares more about profit and their bottom line than they do about the well-being of their staff and their clients. That's more than likely why we literally didn't recognize any staff, the service wasn't as good, and the food wasn't as good - most experienced staff probably left this toxic workplace. It's disappointing, because the food and service used to be great. I won't go back here, and you should also reconsider eating here for the sake of...
Read moreI don’t know if I’ve ever written a review for a restaurant (or anything before) but I ate at Veggie Galaxy a month or so ago and still can’t forget the wonderful experience I had! My boyfriend and I were visiting from Austin, TX and are both vegan. We were staying in Boston and decided to walk almost an hour to visit Veggie Galaxy because we thought the menu looked great and had a nice vibe. Oh my god, it was AMAZING. First off, we had the most phenomenal server named Alayna. How do more people like her not exist? Literally the best service I’ve ever encountered (and we travel a lot). Every place needs an Alayna. They have a huge menu and she gave us a run down that was both incredibly thorough but also succinct and sprinkled with suggestions and fun facts (like ingredients, where things are sourced, what can be made vegan, popular dishes that are the talk of the town etc). She answered all of our questions so thoughtfully and went the extra mile to find answers she didn’t know. 10/10 the best hospitality I’ve ever experienced. My boyfriend and I both felt like we were at a resort being treated like VIP guests. Now: THE FOOD. Everything was DELICIOUS. We ordered the pepperoni Mac & Cheese, fried oysters, the steak frites and the Rachel and all of them were delicious. (No we don’t normally order that much food but we were so impressed we had to try everything we could). We also ordered drinks and the vegan choc cookie. Everything was spectacular, the dishes were the perfect combo of comfort without feeling heavy or greasy. Here I am a month later reminiscing over the experience and dying to go back just so I can visit again. THIS IS A MUST GO if you’re in the...
Read moreRude staff but great food and a messed up order. The guy walked away in the middle of ringing up my order to go have a chat with some other people. Not to calm anyone down, just to go have a chat then came back like he did not want to ring me up. I didn't see a ton of POC folks there, but the rudeness was random. Another worker had to refocus the guy like "Hey, what's going on here?" so he finished ringing me up because he was about to walk away again. It didn't take them long to get the food out. The person who handed me the bag of my food seemed irritated she had to hand me the bag. She could have put it on the counter. It wasn't a germs thing because no one had masks on. It was just weird.
I got a BLT and a Tuna melt. Basically my food for the rest day and some drinks. The Arnold Palmer was mostly tea with a splash of lemonade, so not so great. The BLT barely had any tempeh bacon, and was not double layered. I should have known there was likely going to be something up with the BLT because he told me I got the last of the bacon because they just ran out. I also got gluten free bread. The thing is the food was good, just the order of the BLT was not made correctly but I got the order for lunch and dinner and ran out to get back. Their vegan gluten free house cheese is actually really good, and the fake tuna, does not try to imitate tuna, which is probably why it tastes so good.
The weird behavior and rudeness is why I have it 3 stars. So if you get food at Veggie Galaxy I suggest that you don't get it to go so you can check it before you leave, and be ready to confront odd rudeness when...
