Reasons to eat and not to eat at Theo's.
Reasons not to eat at Theo's:
Service: I've probably had the worst (and also some good) service at this restaurant of any I've been to. Some of the servers are really dreadful. They may ignore you, forget you, be totally unprofessional or snobbish, get the bill wrong, or get you the wrong food but make no apology or effort to remedy it unless pressured. They may argue with you when you insist they brought you the wrong pie and tell you your taste is off. To be fair, I'm sure they have great servers. A few bad experiences doesn't mean that all the servers are bad. Food: While most of the food is fine, avoid the sugar free pie. It is nasty (and I eat lots of sugar free stuff). There are also a few other things that can be hit or miss. Speed: Only go to Theo's if you aren't in a hurry. You might get lucky and get your food extraordinarily quickly, but you might be almost ignored for 30 minutes as you wait to place an order. They may forget your order and never check on you, so you'll have to go find them.
Reasons to eat at Theo's:
Prices: For what you get, the prices are probably the lowest in Cambridge. Food: The variety is pretty good: pizza, sandwiches, pasta, coney dogs, apps, steak, seafood, chicken, etc. The quality is below Ruby Tuesdays or The Forum, but for the price pretty good. Pies: Their are known for their pies. They are the tallest pies I've ever seen and seem to be fresh. Atmosphere: It's a great place to take a crowd or family: very chill and lots of seating. I really enjoy the laid back family feel. Cleanliness: I wouldn't say it's particularly clean or dirty. It used to be pretty dirty, but is much better since they renovated. It's clean enough that I never really think about it being dirty. Local/Unique: It's one of the few local (not chain restaurants) that I like. Out door seating: On nice days, you can enjoy outdoor seating. I don't know of any other local restaurant for this.
In short, I've had some great experiences but also very poor. My friends and I (4 of us) went in for coffee and pie. I think we had about an hour before we had to leave. By the time we'd gone round and round in circles, we barely got the coffee and pie before we had to leave. We seemed to run into every issue possible. It was...
Read moreWe traveled from out of town to meet my aunt for lunch. There was a wait and many people were waiting outside. I gave our name and told the homestead that we would wait outside. My mom is in a wheelchair and there was very little room outside. A man then came outside and yelled out that he was not coming outside to call names. So everyone crammed inside and most were complaining about how rude he was. From around the corner I heard them call our name. I squeezed past the wheelchair to let them know we were coming as she called a second time. Within seconds she then called a different party. I stood behind one other person as she seated that group in the table that was supposed to be ours. When she came back I told her that we were ready and she said she’d have to put me back on the list. I complained and told her that she didn’t give us much time to come around the corner with the wheelchair. She said “I didn’t see a hand signal or anything.” I told her that she waited less than 30 seconds and she wouldn’t see a signal as we were around the corner. She was very rude and did not apologize. We debated going elsewhere but she returned quickly with an available table. When the waitress came she was very abrupt. My mom tried to chat a little, but I explained to my mom that they were very busy and she just wanted to take our order; we could chat with each other. While the waitress was not friendly at all, she WAS polite and was incredibly efficient. The food was delicious. We waited a bit for the check. When I asked her for it she was surprised that we didn’t have it; she thought she’d already given it to us. She brought it promptly. Even though the food was really good, I’m not very interested in returning as the initial impression of the man helping to seat along with the hostess was not good. Next time we will go someplace that is not as busy. *Even though the service wasn’t friendly it was incredibly efficient. We tipped $16 on...
Read moreOk, I am a little torn in writting this review. First thing you should know is that I am not from Cambridge where this restraunt is located. We were going down to see the court house lights display, and all the manicans. We were going down with our neighbor's, so I called ahead to see if we would be able to get a seat for dinner. While talking to the lady on the phone, she suggested that she take a reservation. I agreed. So a reservation was made for 5:00 PM on Saturday. This reservation was made on Thursday before we were to visit. We got to the restraunt a few minutes before 5, and let them know that we were there. We were not seated until 5:35. I am guessing that there idea of a reservation and our idea of a reservation were 2 different things. More like call ahead seating, and once we showed up then they would start working on getting us in. Which had I realized that i would have planned differently. Once seated it was 20 minutes before our order was taken. Both our neighbors and us ordered an appetizer, but she asked me if I wanted it with my meal, and I said I didn't care. But when it came it was not very warm. Our neighbor didn't feel there's was as warm as it should be either. Service wasn't great, but I couldn't help but wonder if they were short staffed because of Covid 19. Our neighbor commented that all of the servers seemed young. Perhaps just inexperienced. Our dinners were pretty good, once we finally got them. That is not to say that it ws exceptionally long wait after we ordered, but by that point everything seemed long. The atmosphere was pleasant, and the overall restraunt seemed clean. The restrooms, at least the mens, could have used a little attention, but nothing horrible. With all that, our neighbor which we had invited, had to go to work later that night, and still had an hour and a half drive home, so visiting the court house light show...
