Reviewing the CV Marketplace itself is a little tricky. It is somewhat a sum of its parts, and typically the reviews of it are a reflection of its individual businesses; in addition, by its very nature it is a community space and due to that, it has some additional responsibilities.
For instance, the abrupt recent changes to the Music on the Paseo, by the owner of the CV Marketplace, has made me reevaluate my initial impressions of how the CV Marketplace itself is run.
Even though there's been quite a lot of community support for the previous music lineup and plenty of feedback regarding its cancellation, the owner hasn't made a public statement about why he decided to unilaterally make this change or has he made himself available for communication with the community. One example of this is that on their Facebook page they limit who can comment on the new Paseo Music Series posts.
As far as the building itself, it's quite nice, as is the parking lot. So far I'm noticing that the upstairs space still seems to be somewhat in the works as far as eating/drinking/shopping. As it's been more than a year now, it's a little surprising. Bringing in a proper coffee/espresso shop would be a great addition, as I see folks already like using the upstairs as a place to sit.
When implementing his vision of the CV Marketplace, I hope that the owner will equally consider the local community's desires and needs, be transparent, and find a way to make himself available to feedback and discussion with...
Read moreIt's about time that Castro Valley has a high-end public marketplace!! Been waiting for them to open for the past 2 yrs. Right now, Seven Hills Bakery, Baron's Butchery and Castro Valley Natural Grocery is opened. Soon there will be Amphora Wine, Akemi restaurant and Oaktown Spice Shop will be opened. Not ready yet, but on the second level will have cooking classes from local chefs as well as a speakeasy bar downstairs. There is parking for the public on right side of the building as well as outdoor seating on the left side of the building. Prior to entering the marketplace, it is nice to see that management is practicing Covid safety measures. There is a person who sprays your hand with sanitizer and are practicing 6 feet social distancing. The bakery is opened at 9:00am. However, the elderly are allowed to go in to make their purchases before the general public. Can't wait until the entire building is ready for business. It'll be a great addition to...
Read moreI cannot say enough good things about this place. This marketplace is the result of a truly well-thought-out development plan for a building that had been empty for quite some time. It reminds me of the Oxbow Market in Napa, but on a smaller scale. Several wonderful restaurants call this place home, so visitors can enjoy sushi, brunch, or appetizers with a glass of wine. The grocery has really good organic foods, a wonderful addition to Castro Valley since the proposal for a Spouts further down the road failed. The Marketplace also has amazing pastries and breads at Seven Hills Bakery, high-quality meats at Barron's, a wide variety of spices at the Oaktown Spice Shop, and lovely olive oils and vinegars at Amphora. Different pop-up stores come and go, so there's often new things to check out. Highly recommended for...
