First time I went here was a week after their Grand Opening. I was honestly so excited to come here because I live in San Leandro and I would have to commute pretty far to get my Philz coffee. So I came here around opening time for them and I believe it was also the day after some major holiday. Anyways, I came in and ordered my coffee. There was a guy with a mustache there working in bar and he was very intimidating and had an attitude from the moment that some of us walked in. For example, no “welcome in”, no good morning from him and other baristas there, and at one point I saw him roll his eyes. I get it, it’s early in the morning and maybe he didn’t wake up right. So I didn’t think much of it and just waited patiently. There wasn’t much people at that hour so I didn’t really understand why he was rushing or angry. He wasn’t calling out any names but I saw some drinks on bar and the people that ordered before me walked up to the same area and picked up their drinks. And at that time, I didn’t see any sign whatsoever for Mobile Pick ups in that same area. After 5 minutes, I walked up to just check my name, since I didn’t hear him say names, and he was so aggressive for no reason. Didn’t even greet me or anything, just very aggressive at me and saying that these are for mobile and my order isn’t ready. Like okay I get it, you don’t have to be so rude about it. I wouldn’t say he was yelling but his voice was so loud and there literally was only me and a family of 6 after me in the cafe. No one else. So yes, I felt stupid for even looking at the names and it’s only 5:45am. After that encounter, I felt embarrassed so I just sat down and waited patiently. After 10 minutes gone by, I still haven’t heard my name for my order and I started getting antsy since the family of 6 after me got their coffee first before me. But I was kind of scared of that guy so I just waited. After 20minutes, he finally called my name for my order and I just rushed to get it. I know that review is late, but I did come by about a week ago with a friend of mine and it wasn’t the greatest experience as well. Long wait times during their off peak hours and the coffee isn’t as great as their other locations. I’ve been a barista and I know how it is in the mornings. So at the time, I kind of brushed it off and let it go since I understood that it was early and especially after a holiday. But the second time I went, I still felt like this store isn’t welcoming and friendly. And the coffee for some reason isn’t the same as the other locations. So sorry Castro Valley but I’d rather commute like I used to, to other locations to...
Read moreFirst time trying Philz and I get the hype!! Really yummy coffee. We got to try a couple different ones since we knew we wouldn’t be back for a while. Loveddd winter bliss with oatmilk and iced. Wowwww yummy. Mocha tesora (also iced and with oat) was really good too— I love the richness of the chocolate in both previous drinks. I appreciate being able to adjust my preferences so easily and would get light sugar next time based on personal preference. Also Gingersnap is delish if you like gingerbread omg. So good and spicy in the best way. Separately: I think people need to relax about the wait times and work on their empathy lol like it’s a new store location.. give the employees some grace as they’re working to keep up with the intense demand. I will say that the day I went, there was only one person fully dedicated to making mobile orders and it seemed like they needed more support. it seemed like the mobiles and cafe orders were completely separate— makes sense… but if there’s just one or two people on mobiles and 5 people on cafe orders and the queue systems and stations are completely separate, then mobiles are gonna be pretty behind. However, when you go to place a mobile order on the app, it tells you an estimated wait time before you even place the order. My opinion stands: amazing cup of coffee and worth...
Read morePlease save yourself from this location and go literally to any other Philz where I've never had rudeness be an issue before.
I wrote an email directly to Philz corporate stating the below:
"I ordered a small Philharmonic from this location on 9/1/2024 at 11:39am and got to the store at 11:44am waiting for the drink.
The barista by the name of Molly looked at me and rolled her eyes with attitude. She then proceeded to glance over at me and talk about me to her coworkers next to her! Her attitude was total mean girl behavior and I felt like this is extremely unprofessional and rude.
There was no reason for her to treat me that way as all I did was ask her if she had my drink ready which said it was at 11:45am and I had asked at 11:48am. I didn't know who the barista was and I feel very upset about this situation because it's just plain mean girl behavior. "
I've been going to Philz for a decade and have never ever encountered this type of behavior in Berkeley, Sacramento, San Jose, or San Ramon but just wow in my own hometown....
Hopefully Molly gets an attitude check because someone like her does not deserve to work a service job much less any job if she's going to treat people like that. I'd much rather go to Starbucks than ever deal with someone like that again...
