Other than the long wait after ordering everything was fantastic. Very nice decor and clean throughout. Hit happy hour for the 2 for 1 drink special...very good margaritas that were compt because of the extra long wait for our food to arrive. Steak Tacos were very hot and deeeeelicious according to the Mrs. The Cantina Skillet Pollo was a good sized portion with steak, chicken, shrimp, chorizo, onions and peppers...alot for your money and very good! We'll definitely be back again and hopefully they won't lose our order again.
2nd Visit... This was our second stop here and the service was still lacking unfortunately. Both of our orders seemed to take quite awhile despite it being surprisingly slow on a Cinco de Mayo weekend (maybe a sign that things aren't too positive). Both of our orders came out incorrect... the Burrito Chilanga Grande was ordered with double rice and no beans, the El Cantinazo was ordered with the extra shrimp...the first order came with beans and the second one was sans the shrimp. The Burrito was very good...the El Cantinazo was a good size portion of a meal to say the least! It's negative was the spiciness of the Chorizo overpowered the dish..it was VERY spicy, the chicken, steak, and pork were all overcooked as well. The best part was the shrmp, which was brought out a few minutes late as it was forgotten to begin with. I've had versions of this dish at four or five different places and this one rates low on my list. I think we'll be back for one more visit as they're still items on the menu that look tempting...
3rd Visit... This was our third visit to this Cedar Rapids and I think it'll be awhile before we go back. All three visits had some glimmer of hope but fell short on the whole each time. The chips and salsa seem to be legit and those have been consistently good. The Barilla Burrito tortilla was done to perfection but what was inside fell short. It could have been outstanding but with tons of rice and very little beans and more importantly, very little Barilla meat it fell short. Service was faster this time but being that it was a Friday at lunch time and we were two of about five people in the place it...
Read moreUsed to go to La Cantina every Friday with several friends for happy hour and dinner. When it first opened, business and service seemed good. After my past 3 experiences, i will not be going back. The last one ending in me and some friends walking out after not being greeted after 15 minutes of sitting at a table.
Seems that every time as of late that I have gone in there, I do not feel welcomed. Ranging from the greeters looking at you like you are lost, or the bartender pissed off that you walked in at 9 o'clock on a Friday night and he's ready to be off work already. BTW, their FB page states they are open till 2 am.
I went there on Cinco De Mayo, which was a Friday night this year. I was with a group of 12 and we showed up shortly after 10pm. There were nearly 20 other people in the restaurant. We were hounded by several employees that the kitchen closes at 11pm. We acknowledged this and stated we were only their for drinks. They went around the restaurant calling for last call about 10:50pm. We proceeded to order one more round of drinks. But only 10 minutes later @ 11pm we were being kicked out by the mocho man bartender. At this point, you better believe we took our time with our drinks.
I almost forgot to mention that while we were sitting at our table drinking, roughly 6-8 employees were sitting and drinking at the table next to us. It seemed as if we were getting kicked out so that they could have their own party; only on the busiest day of the year for them.
In all, it seems the place is just poorly managed. Every time I call I get a B.S. answer as to when they close. Seems like all the employees and always in a hurry to get out of there. They should cherish their jobs while they have one. I see a common trend with restaurants in this building. I don't see them lasting over a year following a promising...
Read moreThe hubs and I tried out the downtown location shortly after moving to CR and were extremely disappointed. Even though we swore we would never go back, we decided to give the Edgewood location a shot, largely due to having a coupon.
Firstly, the dining area is weird. It's so open and seemingly oddly set up. The servers had to keep gingerly squeezing themselves between our table and the next. Then, it took a while to have someone take our drink then food order. When we did order, it was difficult to convey what we wanted to the server. Several minutes later, she came back to ask my husband again what it was that he ordered. We sat and waited, watching other diners' food come out before ours. Another server stopped by our table to refill our drinks and asked what we ordered. After telling him, our food came out still several minutes later.
Despite the server using hot pads to bring our plates, the food and plates were cold. The sauce covering the burritos was reminiscent of canned tomato sauce with no seasoning. The beans tasted like Rosarita canned beans you'd find in a store. The first bite of my husband's burrito contained a whole bay leaf that he had to remove. My rice was crunchy.
After two tries, it is safe to say we will not...
