Cottage Pub & Restaurant — Restaurant in Chambersburg

Pretty low key, not too noisy when I was there. The beer was good, but maybe only 10 beers on tap. The girl serving was nice enough, but not really engaged with people like you would expect from a bar tender. It was more like watching a target employee when there’s no one at the register…bored. I feel like bar tenders are supposed to be people oriented. They ask questions and smile a lot and share stories. They engage. And when it’s clear that a customer doesn’t what to talk, fine. They go talk to the next person. But to what never sit down and play on their phone. Lots of seating at tables, plus the bar. Not sure about the food, it was too late to order. The restroom was clean with soap & paper towels available. What I didn’t like was two things:

1. Of the 7 people in the building, none of us were watching the football game on tv. But almost every tv in the place (and the speakers) were playing a football game. It’s like the owner (or operator) just assumes that anyone going to a bar for a drink at the end of the day wants to watch football. I don’t like football. And apparently neither did anyone else there that night. But that’s what was on. Why can’t a bar show Family Guy or Star Wars or West Coast Customs or anything other than football? It’s a stereotype to assume that everyone going to a bar is a man and that all men like football. Try something else.
2. I’m used to paying $8-12 for a beer in my hometown. When I saw the tab of 10.50 for two beers, I decided to be generous with a 4.50 tip. That’s 43%. Did the bar tender say thank you when she entered that amount into the computer? Nope. Just business as usual, apparently. I guess I should’ve left the 1.50 tip that a lack of good manners might deserve. BTW, this isn’t the only place where workers getting a tip aren’t grateful. Starbucks is full of them. WHEN SOMEONE GIVES YOU EXTRA MONEY, YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO SAY THANK...

Just got home after one of the worst dining experiences ever. I'd heard such wonderful comments and after FINALLY having our order taken, we waited an hour! When the waitress finally came to "check on us", we inquired as to when our food would be out as we have children with us. She replied "that's not my fault and I was going to ask if you wanted anything else but you didn't give me a chance!" Then stormed away. Now I understand that it isn't her fault and by no means were we upset with her until that moment. Then we watched her go to the kitchen and complain about us (pointing and loudly cursing). So I nicely walked over to the kitchen door, knocked on the glass, at which point she slammed the door open in my face. I remained nice and asked for the drink bill and to cancel our order. She yelled "yep! I'll tell the kitchen!"

We put some money down and left. I am VERY disappointed in the service with the wait but enraged by the attitude we completely did not deserve. We were incredibly understanding and as a waitress, you need to know that a table waiting for an hour is not ok. She never checked and then gave US attitude. Unacceptable. I don't recommend this...

My mom loves this place but I haven’t been back since the last visit. Kitchen was having a difficult time getting our food out and waitress seemed stressed. Being that every member of my family present had either been a server at some point in their lives or is currently employed as one, we began a conversation along the lines of “maybe she is having a bad night, it may not be her fault she is at the mercy of the kitchen, we understand it’s ok.” Little did we know the owner was sitting at a table near by and had been listening. She came to our table to “apologize” but what she really did was become super defensive in trying to explain why we were having a less than great experience and even slightly bad mouthed the waitress to us! (The waitress told us she was quitting anyways so doubt she cares now) She insisted we return for meals on the House but I never did because she seemed so defensive over nothing.
