Big J J Fish & Chicken — Restaurant in Champaign

I haven’t ate fast food in while so I was looking forward to getting some good fresh sloppy fast food from JJ’s today. Well, it appears that JJ’s is not the same JJ’s that it once was. It appears they got new workers and new cooks. I also see that the parking lot wasn’t active like it use to be.

When I use to come here, I think the guy’s name was Moe use to behind the counter. When he would give the food, I recall that he would always tie the bag in a certain bow before giving it to you and you knew that the food would was going to be super 🔥🔥🔥.

Well today wasn’t that pleasant experience. I usually get the italian beef dipped w/ cheese and an extra side of fries w/ a side of cheese lol. The italian beef was barley dipped; it was dry dry (2x). The cheese on the italian beef wasn’t even melted. The fries were just warm. They gave this tiny cheese sauce and the extra fry was skimpy (they use to put the extra fry in a container and load you). If I wasn’t so hungry I would’ve included a picture of how everything looked.

So yea, I’m a little disappointed. On a positive note, I can say the lady behind the counter was friendly.

So overall, I may give them another shot in future. Maybe it was just an off day (first time this type of service ever happened here). But if this is how it’s going be from here on...

Having not been home to Champaign in awhile, I did not know what to expect and just went with a choice I made from Google - sight unseen. . Well, I might not have chose BIG JJ, but am glad I did.

I like to sample things BUT have core items and things I like and ask for. I settled on the fish combo dinner with Catfish and Walleye I then added a piece of fish that I thought was really, really good! It was the Perch. And to top it off, I've had a crazy urge for fried Okra and ordered that as well. And, like the perch, I am damn glad I did as if it was as fresh, or they served it as close to fresh as you'll ever find it anywhere!. I mean three hours later, the fried coating AND the okra inside were BOTH Crispy and tasty.

We wanted some chicken to take back to the motel we had seen this place while driving around. My lady is putty picky about how she likes her chicken . She said it wasn't as good as her faverate place so that is a gold star I ate till I was stuffed. The looks of the place might scare some off it is small building possibly a retired gas station. In in person dining the waiting room has three bench seats around the perimeter no public restroom the order counter is a 60's Delly cooler with plactic por the pandemic. It is full of sliced cakes in individual containers and cans of soda. A very good selection of fried food chicken,fish,shrimp both large and small, okra and cheese sticks and a lot of options. I did notice that are few in the back and really cranking out the food. The menu is very self explanatory and easy to read above the counter. Please have your mind made up before you go to order.
