BAD DINING EXPERIENCE ALERT: Horrible experience! Please avoid visiting this restaurant at all costs if you're in Champaign. The food is overpriced for the portion sizes and is not at all palatable. We went there for my birthday dinner and ordered schezwan chicken, butter chicken, naan & mango lassi. Apart from the lassi, we couldn't really touch any of the food as they were taste less, spice less and an utter disaster! The naan was too chewy & simply felt like we're having a frozen one that was just heated up & served. The butter chicken felt nothing close to an authentic butter chicken as the gravy was too sour and full of uncooked tomatoes with no balance of flavors. The schezwan chicken starter portion was so tiny that we could literally count the pieces. Overall it was a nightmare of an experience & disappointment!!! Response to owner: Yes I'm pretty sure, it is Kohinoor restaurant in Champaign. Also I don't know about whether you have schezwan chicken as starter or not. But that's what your waiter recommended us. Attached are the pictures for your reference so you can verify against the background and your food. And I'm stating my experience at your pathetic restaurant which you can't alter just by being defensive. Plus, the horrible food served to us yesterday was really bad on our stomach. IMPROVE your service & acknowledge your mistakes

I picked this restaurant, because I heard it has the best Indian food in the Urbana-Champaign area. I think the rumors are correct. The food is stellar. Amazing cooking and beautiful presentation. When you ask them to make food spicy, they can REALLY spice it up for you. But, you get what you ask for. And it's not a meaningless spice - it's incredibly flavorful and just adds to the dish. I can't speak enough of the service. Phenomenal service. Water jugs are left on each table and more water was provided when we were running low, without us asking. Our waiter continuously check on us, without being intrusive. And the {cook?}{owner?} does a great job taking your order and explaining each dish when you have questions. If he thinks soemthing will be too spicy for you, he lets you know. And when he saw we didn't completely finish a dish because of the level of spice, he asked if we'd like a milder one. A very VERY thoughtful cook who just wants people to enjoy the experience of eating there. Wonderful experience I would 100% recommend if you enjoy Indian food. Definitely would come back!

OVERALL RATING 8/10 The atmosphere of the restaurant is inviting. It has a good vibe; soft music and dimmed lighting. There is ample seating to accommodate many guests. The restaurant is very clean; the floors, tables, plates and silverware were all clean. Bathrooms were very clean and well-stocked with the necessary items. The staff member who served us was Anil. He was extremely helpful and friendly. During our meal, he was always there when we needed him. Now to our meal: we had the Samosa Chat as our appetizer. It was wonderfully made and full of flavor. For our entrees, we had the Butter Chicken Ginger Masala and the Lamb Garlic Masala. For our breads, we had the Roti and Paratha. For our drinks, we had the Masala Chai. The food was absolutely delicious. There are 4 other Indian restaurants in the Champaign/Urbana area, and I have ate at all of them. I can honestly say that KohiNoor is by far the best and most authentic Indian cuisine in this area. For your review, I have attached photos of our meal. Our total bill for two came out to $60.18.

Food here was decent but the service was horrible.

We ordered samosa chaat (on urging from the waitress that we order an appetizer because the kitchen was a bit slow that night - more on that to follow), tandoori chicken (4 pc), chicken tikka masala, and saag paneer. The samosa chaat was good and a nice little change from just samosas - though I could have just ordered the samasos and recreated it myself. Tandoori was good, the chicken tikka masala was just ok- the chicken was tough, but the sauce tasted good. The saag paneer was our favorite dish by far. Quantities were decent - we were a party of two and had plenty of tandoori chicken and chicken tikka masala leftover. The naan portions were huge - if we'd realized how big they were we would have gotten two rice sides and one naan, even for the two of us we ended up with an entire piece left.

The food couldn't make up for the service though - after that night we likely won't be back. The restaurant seemed busy when we got there, so when the waitress mentioned that the kitchen was a little slow, we figured they were unexpectedly understaffed and slammed - no big deal. Our appetizer (ordered on urging by the waitress) came quickly enough, but we waited probably another hour for our entrees to arrive. I quickly realized the restaurant seemed so busy because none of the tables were turning over and everyone was waiting for food - we asked our waitress and she said this was just an average friday night and it's always like this. A neighboring table left before their main dishes arrived - the waitress spent the rest of the evening complaining to us about them leaving without paying. Running out on the bill for their appetizers and drinks is rude, but they had kids with them and I totally understand their impatience with no food and no reassurance from the staff that it was coming any time soon.

Service may be better during the week or at lunch time, and I'd consider getting take out, but I would not recommend...

I ordered from them the first time through Grubhub. I couldn't decide what to have and they were the highest recommended place so I decided to try it even though I know nothing about Indian food. I LOVED IT!!! I couldn't stop thinking about it. My wife came back from vacation four days later, and I ordered it in for us to show her.

I've now had their food on 4 occasions but tonight was our first time going to the restaurant. WOW were we missing out! The smells on arrival were intoxicating! I was hardly hungry when we arrived for an early dinner, but by the time we ordered I was starving.

The staff was incredibly inviting. While the restaurant isn't small it still feels quite intimate. There were a few large tables of people and even with all the people inside, it wasn't horribly loud. This place is fantastic for date night! And clean!

Each time I've ordered I have tried something completely different. Again I know next to nothing about Indian cuisine, so I'm trying to learn what I like and don't.... the issue is I haven't had anything from them that wasn't fantastic. The waitress we had was fantastic at guiding us through the menu and made recommendations based on our comments. This is the part that I was missing the most from trying to order on my own online. She did a great job of helping us because tonight's meal was the best I've had from them. All of their staff from the gentleman who brought out the food, to the girl serving water, were all incredibly nice and welcoming. All smiles here.

On our way out we each peeked into the bar/ lounge area and it was very nice, a real quiet comfortable place even with a fairly large gathering inside.

Tonight's host said to my wife on the way out "Thank you and come back soon" to which my wife replied "oh we will" and I...

I went to this place on a date on a recommendation. I liked the entres, they were delicious and had plenty of food. The service was okay, I don't expect too much when there is a language barrier. Though, watching a couple who came in around 5mins after us, who had the same waitress as us, finish eating and leave before we even got our entres... wasn't pleasant. However, that wasn't the part that prompted me to write this. I could live with that, the main course definitely made up for it and was worth waiting for. And if that's all you're ordering... I highly recommend trying this place out.

My problem lies in the desserts. We ordered the desserts to go bc we were in a bit of a rush to get home. They were VERY small. I don't even remember the names of the dishes since this was a few days ago... I think one was named mango Khafi and one was Jamaun or smtg like that. The mango ice cream was what I ordered. I was excited bc looking at the container it was in, it looked like I got a big dessert. I looove dessert. But when I opened it up, it was filled with ice and in the middle was what looked to me like a medium sauce cup with the ice cream in it. The ice was appreciated tho did cause the top of the ice cream to ice over. The other dessert, also in a large container compared to the actually size, was kind of like little donut holes soaked in a sweet sauce... My bf compared the taste to pancakes. They were maybe the size of a quarter in diameter. And there was only TWO. For $3 each and the size of the containers, I was expecting reasonable portions of food. Now, if that's what you're expecting... Not a big deal. I guess my suggestion would be: do a bit of research before ordering so they aren't a...
