Muddy Waters Coffee Bar — Restaurant in Charleston

Coffee, great. Baristas, amazing. Owner, KAREN! my boyfriend and I are on a road trip and we work remote on our computers. We bought 3 expensive drinks from this place and we use our own WiFi.

We were sitting outside on their patio working. There were tables outside and many tables inside open. We were barely taking up any space, this lady walks up to us and asks us what we were doing, she then informed us this outdoor seating was for the coffee shop??? Lol we informed her that we had spent plenty of money here today then she said said oh ok and scurried away embarrassed.

I’m not the type to write but a bad review but this was unprofessional, insulting and bad customer service.

She was 100% a Karen and seems like the type who would call the police or harass homeless people.

I could see if there were people waiting for tables outside but we were the only ones even out there?

The coffee is good but there are 100’s of others to choose from in a city as big...

This coffee shop was just ok. I don’t feel the cashier/barista taking my order was very inviting or helpful. This was my first time in the establishment, and honestly wasn’t a good enough experience to return. I told her I wasn’t sure what I wanted just yet, only that I wanted something hot. Normally, that is a que to make recommendations, but if they don’t ok fine I assume they are just giving me time to look. I asked if their caramel macchiato is like Starbucks or a true macchiato. (A true one is not overly sweet) she said they can make it both ways, so I asked for the traditional. I am not sure if she just didn’t understand my question or just didn’t know herself and was afraid to ask, but when I received my very tiny cup I was confused. It was literally two shots of espresso in a cup. That is not a macchiato. Came into town to visit family members found this place thanks to random comment on TikTok.

My mom is a late bloomer die hard Starbucks lover. Only orders chai from Starbucks. She loved her drink on the first sip and kept complimenting on how smooth and creamy the drink was. My mom is extremely picky with her food/drinks so the fact she loved her drink is a big deal.

My matcha was great also. The front desk worker (sorry don’t remember names well) fully explained each drink and gave recommendations.

The place is a small cozy atmosphere. Would recommend drinking inside if there is room. If I were to live here in SC this would be my go to place to get my matcha fix.
