The Jervey — Restaurant in Charlottesville

I’m truly shocked that people enjoyed this food! When we entered without reservations on a Monday at 4:45 the “maître d” was quite perplexed and thought that we might not be seated although the bar was empty. Nevermind, we sat at the bar and truly enjoyed our drinks. We all agreed that the cocktails were delicious. We ordered the brussel sprouts to start. A nice idea but most weren’t cooked through and the flavor was lackluster. We ordered a second drink and the restaurant started to fill with smoke while the kitchen ramped up. Evidently they don’t need a vent hood for a steakhouse? For our entrees we ordered the brick pressed chicken and a hanger steak. I could have made equally good chicken in my air fryer without a brick and a dash of salt. The steak was supposed to be medium but mostly came out rare. The au gratin potatoes were inedible as they had all the salt in the restaurant. And in case they don’t warn you, the red wine is chilled. Great atmosphere. Great vibes. Great asthetic. Nick our server was on it! He gave great recommendations, explained things so well. We got the steelhead trout, hanger steak, fries, broccolini, onion soup and dipped the Gruyère popovers into it. Some side sauces. The wine was good. The Black Manhattan was great. The warm cookies and milk was a nice way to end. We just left happy and in such a good mood. This is the kinda place you want to make your go-to bar. They have a small table that is open for walk-in (two people) and the bar is as well. And otherwise nice seating you can reserve. Great potential but they need to figure some things out. At a high end restaurant you expect your server to be able to talk intelligently about the menu, but our server struggled to be able to describe the dishes. And he told us the Autumn Olive pork was from Indiana when we know it's a local farm. On the other hand, the food was good but the presentation lacked elegance.
