This place refused to accept my Driver's License because it was out of state; they said they do not accept any out of state licenses, passports, or other forms of ID which means this bar does not serve alcohol to anyone who does not live in New Jersey. Seriously. Not only that but we arrived at 9:20 PM and the lady who "helped" us informed us that the kitchen would close at 10:00 PM. She then pressured us to place our order before the kitchen closed five different times within five minutes; I couldn't even look at the menu. When I tried to order drinks she informed us about the discriminatory out of state rule and refused to accept a passport or driver's license unless it was from New Jersey. How is that even legal? Rather than challenging the out of state rule, we got the message and just left. If you're from out of state then this place clearly does not want you there. All white people inside too. I'm not sure whether this bar made up a rule to refuse us service because my girlfriend is Mexican and they are racist or if they seriously refuse service to anyone not from New Jersey. Either way you shouldn't go here or support a business that...
Read moreI hate to give River Grille such an average rating, but here is my take.
Chatham, NJ, does not have a whole lot of selection when it comes to dining. There are some great places and some not so great places. In my opinion, River Grille slides right in the middle. For starters, it’s a great neighborhood bar, seems very fun and intimate. They have plenty of seating, indoor and outdoor. The only bad part was the amount of flies outside.. I had to constantly be vigilant and karate chop flies away from my fries.
I heard the French onion soup was good here, which is what drew me to try their food. I’ll be honest, it was good, but not what I expected - a bit too liquidy, not as creamy. The blue cheese burger (forgot the name) really lacked on flavor and salt.. I had to squeeze every drop off ketchup out of the packet to give the burger some flavor. Otherwise, the wings were ok - standard, nothing special. My friend got red wine, which tasted very dilute. Overall, food wasn’t great, but the vibes and service were good - no...
Read moreThe Chatham River Grille has an eclectic mix of both food, ambiance and clientele. Drive slowly when you approach the place, because it is easy to miss it. They seem to be located next to a lumber yard/warehouse and across the street from a school bus parking lot. Once you enter Chatham River Grille, you realize that the restaurant is actually more bar than restaurant. We went on a Friday and there was a lively crowd of workmen from the neighboring lots, a cowboy, some boozers and the yuppies of Chatham. Since it was a Friday evening, our wait was quite long. There are only a few tables at the restaurant, but once seated, the food was mostly good. I had some very weak Buffalo Wings, but my main meal of French Dip sandwich was excellent. My wife's crabcake was large and tasty. Her calamari was generic, but good. Overall, I liked this place because it wasn't the generic uppity restaurant and it wasn't a hipster dive bar dump, it had a nice...
