I love a good cup and Royal Mile did not disappoint. I had the opportunity to try the Tanzanian Peaberry. HERE IS MY STORY.
Right off the bat, the Peaberry smells great in the bag. It was roasted just slightly darker than I'm used to (pretty light roasts), but that didn't affect the taste. I made a couple cups of it over a few days with my Aeropress and Kalita Wave. Out of the Kalita, it smelled great. The flavor is kind of hard to place because it's a little of everything. It's got this sweet dirt flavor that I can't describe in any other way, combined with a smooth berry flavor that reminded me more of blueberries than a red berry flavor like a lot of Ethiopians have. There's a hint of spiciness to it as well that rounds it out. Out of the Aeropress these flavors are more pronounced and I got a nice berry flavor with the spicy notes, which again, are faint but there. These beans taste "dark" whereas a lot of Ethiopians taste "bright" - the roast is not actually dark, nor does it have a lot of roast flavor like French-roasted coffee - it just has a "dark" taste to it. It's hard to describe. The aftertaste is bold and rich with that sweet dirt flavor being the most apparent. It's not a bad flavor at all, it's just earthy. I like it. The mouthfeel was fantastic - not too thin, but not too thick. It was slightly oily and coated my tongue with the flavor, but didn't leave it feeling saturated or dry. Overall, I think the Peaberry makes a delicious, versatile cup and would taste good with any brewing method, and would be a good entry point for people who haven't ventured into fresh-roasted "craft" coffee. I prefer more fruity/floral beans, but I enjoyed every drop of the Tanzanian Peaberry nonetheless.
Props to Jamie and crew for having some excellent coffee. I'll definitely be...
Read morePre-ground bags, stale jars of instant, big name coffee shops: I've tried them all. But, small-batch artisan coffees were a bit intimidating to me. Whenever I would look at the high prices, the exotic origins, and the long strings of unpronounceable bean names, I would decide that maybe simpler was better for me.
Royal Mile Coffee has changed all that. Owners Jamie and Jess matched me with two of their artisan creations: an Ethiopian roast and the Studio 14 espresso. Both were fresh with a full-bodied flavor that you just don't experience in the sort of coffee I normally drank. The espresso was especially outstanding. I was blown away by the complexity of the flavor and its smoothness. I like espresso in general, but I think this is one of the most delightfully smooth brews I've had. I can really see this being your daily cup. For quality alone, Royal Mile convinced me that it's well worth looking beyond the big chains for your daily fix.
I was equally impressed with the whole experience. Royal Mile's website took some of the confusion out of learning about the various roasts. The owners are friendly, expert, and provide the sort of first-class customer service that you can't expect from a larger company. Seriously, from selecting the coffees to receiving the super-fresh roasts so quickly, everything went down just as smoothly as the coffees themselves. For superb coffee and excellent customer service, I would rate this among the...
Read moreI have had a large cup of black coffee everyday since i started college. I'm now 34 years old. That includes 5843 cups of coffee that were burnt, tasteless, and utterly boring. There is nothing wrong with drinking a mass produced over processed coffee. There is also nothing wrong with eating at a fast food joint. But if you want GOOD food you don't go for fast food. So I went for the gourmet stuff.
Jamie (one of the owners) walked me through my first bean selection. He suggested three varieties in order to find the one I liked best. Having never ventured into the world of real coffee before I gave him my likes and dislikes and he paired me up with three types of coffee.
I'll spare you the long and boring details of the selections process but I finally ended up choosing Studio 14 Espresso.
What absolutely floored me is I picked the coffee I liked based on flavor. Ive never tasted coffee with flavor. Like subtle hints of flavor that before was foreign to me! And not flavor syrup or additives. Actual earthen flavors that were supposed to be there.
I love my Studio 14 Espresso.
Thank You Royal Mile for...
