This place is awesome.. very hospitable chef and staff and such delicious and fresh food. I’ve been here 3 times in the last 2 months!
The first time I went I got omakase which is where the chef chooses the pieces for you and serves in like 7/8 courses.. literally everything was extremely flavorful and fresh. It’s a very cool experience and the chef gets to understand your tastes and makes things he thinks you’d like or would surprise you! Everything was presented beautifully - delicate and bright.. and all the flavors had the same sensibilities. Hemmi is very chill and funny so it was an easy going and enjoyable meal.
I’ve also gotten their ringo zen 4 course. The appetizers were great: tuna sashimi, salmon roe over grated Dikon as well as a (I think hamachi) set of sliced fish in a sesame sauce plus 2 others. For 2nd course I choose the personal grill of beef toban yaki. They give you your own grill, butter and sliced fine quality beef and you get to grill your slices as rare or done as you want - very fun.. plus they serve it with like a Japanese kalbi sauce.. last was chirasu with miso soup.. it’s very filling and they use all their really fresh fish and add just a little sauce..
This place is unbelievably good - of the 20 or so sushi places I’ve been in Chicago I’d put it in my top 2. Other places are pretentious or don’t have the quality to justify their prices. This place has it all.
Hemmi is very skilled and easy going and the wait staff is very warm and friendly. The location is relaxed and parking is easy.

Read moreWhat a hidden gem! Authentic Japanese sushi and small plates restaurant. Run by Japanese head chef and Japanese staff. The service was great and the chef even came to escort us out to the door!
The quality of the fish for sashimi was above average and they even have fresh myoga on the sashimi set. Everything melted in our mouth and our favorites were the scallop, hamachi, salmon, and fatty tuna.
Surprisingly, what stole the show was the Inaniwa ume udon! The broth was a different level of umami and the noodle's texture was a cross between typically udon and ramen noodle chewiness. The ume was a delightful contrast of flavor.
We also enjoyed the chawamushi which had a crab gravy on top and the egg custard texture was silky smooth. However, it needs a tad bit more seasoning to enhance the delicateness.
Overall, we enjoyed the experience and will definitely be back.

Read moreFantastic place for pub-style Japanese food. The tsukune skewers and ebi tendon (tempura over rice) stole the show! The tempura was reminiscent of Japan. The service was fantastic, and there wasn’t a bad dish. All I can say is it’s a one of one Japanese restaurant in Chicago. I’m so glad we found this place!
Also, I saw the chef serve omakase at the bar, and the menu has solid sushi options such as bluefin tuna (fatty) and salt-water eel (anago).
Like I said though, to me, the skewers and tempura really stole the show. Please visit as it’s a restaurant that deserves way more...
