Quiet & subdued interior with cloth napkins & tablecloths (although the tablecloths were covered by a sheet of hard plastic) Pleasant and inviting, with a wonderful aroma of tomato sauce permeating the air. Our water glasses were filled immediately and our server appeared promptly to take our drink order and deliver a bread basket. Our server recited the specials, one of which was an appetizer of stuffed hot pepper, meatballs and a herbed ricotta ball. It sounded good so that's what I ordered. My wife ordered the shrimp cocktail, as usual. Both arrived without much delay & both were delicious. The special was one large, stuffed, hot pepper that had been breaded and then deep fried. I have an affinity for stuffed hot peppers, and this was the best I've ever ever had (and I've had some that were really great). The hot banana pepper was actually hot, and it was fried perfectly. The ricotta offered a respite from the heat if you needed relief. Since the portion was huge, I set aside the meatballs. The wife's shrimp cocktail was fresh tasting and she pronounced it "excellent". Salads came out promptly after the appetizer plates were cleared and they were also huge, fresh and tasty. Entrée dishes arrived next. The wife's chicken parmesan and my veal parmesan were huge. But, more importantly, they were excellent. The sauce we'd been smelling was delicious. Not too much garlic but plenty of fresh tomato flavor. Both of our Entrées included a healthy portion of spaghetti, and we knew we'd be boxing them up in to-go containers for tomorrow because there was no way we'd be able to eat all the great food. There is something very comforting about food that is exactly as expected & well executed. On our last visit I tried the steak and was disappointed by the amount of gristle. This time, I stuck to the Italian side of the menu and was richly rewarded. Service was outstanding. Our sever (Kalina) was nothing short of perfect and all of the staff was very attentive, refilling our water, clearing...
Read moreI went to dinner with my mother this evening, and the food was delicious! I had the chicken soup, gnocchi, and cannoli. The chicken soup was nicely seasoned with an ample amount of tender chicken and small balls of pasta. The gnocchi was fresh and the meat sauce was spicy! The cannoli was cheese based with a nice shell and whipped cream/chocolate sauce spread on the plate. The 2 cannolis were large and 1 would have been more than adequate. My mother had the house salad with balsamic dressing which she enjoyed. She then had the veal with spaghetti in tomato sauce, which she loved! She also had the cannoli. Although the bread was fresh, it would be best to either heat the bread or bring the butter to room temperature before serving. The service was very attentive. The room and bathroom were very clean and the white linen service was a nice touch! Fortuna's also has excellent A/C, which was very appreciated during this sweltering day! I tend to pick my restaurants during the late spring/ summer based on the A/C issue. I also think it is time for Fortuna's to open a restaurant in Grand Island, as we have an excellent market to cater to since many residents can afford their price point and many are of Italian descent. GI does not have a traditional Italian restaurant. We have Nouvelle Cuisine Italian, which is also excellent, but is a different category of food. 19th Street in Niagara Falls is not a suitable location for Fortuna's. We only go to Fortuna's during the daylight, as the neighborhood is quite dangerous. I can't wait to go back...
Read moreI first started going here as a young child with my family. I had an aunt lived in Niagara Falls, NY and it was a ritual to go here when we visited her. Back then, it was a little "hole in the wall" kind of restaurant with wonderful Italian food.
Since then, it's become more upscale in its atmosphere and food offerings. My husband and I went there to celebrate a significant anniversary and it didn't fail to please. We both had veal dishes that were out of this world. (If you're not a veal fan, you can order chicken instead). Absolutely marvelous! Our dinners included a house salad with wonderfully garlicky house-made Italian dressing. All pasta is homemade as well. Our dinners were served over capellini. Too full for dessert, but they do offer homemade cannoli. Service was first rate! I can't fault a thing!
As a child, they had typical red and white checked vinyl tablecloths. Now, the restaurant is upscale in its design and wouldn't dream of any tablecloths below linen. The same wooden chairs are still in use, but they have been nicely reupholstered!
Sadly, the neighborhood has declined over the years, but there is plenty of well-lit parking spaces in their lot. I would rate Fortuna's as one of the top restaurants in Niagara Falls. Unfortunately, on the American side, great restaurants are few and far between.
So whether you're a tourist or a Western New York native visiting for the day, you won't be disappointed with Fortuna's. It's...
