I have gotten food from whacko a couple handful of times since they opened and operated out of the quirky but unique shipping container kitchen setup.
Sadly ever since going to the physical store front we personally have noticed a drop in quality at least in comparison to how the food used to be. After 5 or 6 times dining at the physical store front I think we most likely won't be returning.
Our most recent order which was done through Uber Eats pick-up disclosed a pickup time about 20 minutes out from when we ordered. I was dubious of the accuracy of this given past experiences. This wouldn't have been a huge issue except the order was marked as picked up about 20 minutes before it was actually making us wait needlessly in theit already cramped parking lot.
They post disclosures about wait time in their restaurant which honestly feels like a cop out when the food is so average. Our most recent order was a two beef birria taco with the chip trio. Pretty much all of the elements of the food needed a touch of salt. The queso was this odd clumpy texture, the guac was tasteless, however the pineapple salsa was still good. The chips as I said before needed some salt, I'm not sure what seasoning exactly they used but it doesn't appear it was applied consistently, with one bag barely having any seasoning and the other having chips that were heavily covered in it. Some of the chips were rather stale too. The birria tacos were fine but the pickled red onions scantily seemed they went through a proper pickling process.
The staff is fine. I wouldn't say they are rude but it's hot miss on whether or not your greeted at least with a hello or what do you want type attitude. According to wife upon picking up the order despite it being a busy night there wasn't a sense of urgency.
Again we've had some good food experiences in the past but sadly that has not been the case recently. I have no doubt they'll continue to be successful and appeal the college crowd. If you were to go. I'd place bets on less busy times but really it should be consistent across the board. Best of luck...
Read moreCame here on my lunch break and ordered 3 quesabirria tacos, chips and their spicy queso all online through their website. Definitely would call the food here more of a "guilty pleasure". Showed up at the given estimated time and only had to wait a couple of minutes for my order to be ready. The chips were as you'd expect, lightly seasoned. Nothing to write home about. The spicy queso was perfect, not too hot and thick and creamy. The tacos were cooked to perfection. Crispy tortilla, melty cheese and tender beef and the consomme was also a nice addition. I'll have to try their acai bowl next time. The only downside in my opinion is the pricing. If you are on a tight budget, there are more affordable options to choose from in Oswego. Albeit, not as unique or delicious. Update #2. They appeared to have a more limited selection this week due to supply issues. Again I ordered their chips and spicy queso. The queso did feel a bit spicier / hotter than the previous time I tried it. Not detrimentally so, but was a surprise. I like spicy foods. This time I did have their OG Gringo Acai bowl to provide a nice fresh and cool chaser to their spicy queso. Personally I have never had an Acai bowl before, but the fruit all tasted very fresh. The portion itself did feel like a little more than I expected, but for the price it was good. I could probably make two lunches out of the one Acai bowl unless this is just a normal portion for this type of food. Not sure. Update #3 as I tried their new Sunday breakfast menu. I ordered one of each of their breakfast tacos on the menu, and also tried the chorizo breakfast Omelette. The tacos were absolutely delicious. My friend tried the birria & chorizo taco, and I tried the potato & chorizo taco. The omelette was quite the wakeup call as well with a good amount of heat / spice for...
Read moreAs someone who is proudly Mexican, I went into this restaurant hoping to enjoy a taste of home—or at least something close. Instead, what I experienced was not just bad food, but a shallow, careless representation of my culture. I was genuinely curious when I came across a place called “Wacko Gringo”. But from the moment I saw the name, something felt off—and unfortunately, the experience that followed confirmed it.
First, the name itself is disrespectful. “Wacko Gringo” tries to be edgy or funny, but it ends up mocking both cultures—reducing Mexican identity to a joke and using outdated stereotypes for cheap laughs. It sets the tone for a place that doesn’t take the culture seriously, and that’s exactly what I found inside.
The food was completely lacking in flavor, authenticity, and heart. It felt like an empty imitation of Mexican cuisine, made for people who don’t know any better. There was no soul in it—just bland, generic dishes that missed everything that makes our food meaningful.
What made it worse was the overall atmosphere, which leaned more on cliché than culture. It felt like a place trying to cash in on Mexican identity without showing it any actual respect.
It’s frustrating to see something so personal reduced to this. If you’ve ever had real Mexican food—or if you want to understand what it should taste like—do yourself a favor and skip this place. We deserve...
