Zhug Cleveland is not just a restaurant; it’s a delightful journey through Middle Eastern flavors wrapped in an inviting atmosphere that immediately makes you feel at home. As you enter, you’re greeted by a warm, vibrant decor that blends modern aesthetics with a cozy, inviting vibe. The ambiance is perfect for both intimate dinners and lively gatherings, making it a versatile spot for any occasion.

The culinary offerings are truly impressive, beginning with the Smoked Octopus. This dish is a triumph of flavor and technique, featuring octopus that is tender and infused with a rich, smoky essence. Each bite is a celebration of the sea, expertly complemented by a drizzle of zesty sauce that brings the dish to life. It’s a testament to the chef's dedication to sourcing the freshest ingredients and crafting unforgettable flavors.

Adding to the experience are the Za’atar Roasted Carrots, which stand out for their unique flavor profile. The natural sweetness of the carrots is beautifully enhanced by the za’atar seasoning, delivering a fragrant, slightly tangy taste that perfectly balances the smokiness of the octopus. This dish not only excites the palate but also showcases the restaurant’s commitment to using high-quality, seasonal produce.

The Crispy Brussels Sprouts are another highlight, offering an addictive crunch and a burst of flavor with every bite. Tossed in a tangy chili sauce, they provide a delightful contrast to the other dishes on the table. These sprouts are more than just a side; they’re a testament to Zhug’s ability to elevate simple ingredients into something truly special.

Don’t overlook the Leeks and Feta, which add a creamy, savory element to the dining experience. The tender leeks are perfectly cooked, and the feta introduces a rich, salty note that enhances the overall dish. Together, these components create a well-balanced meal that delights the senses.

As you savor these exquisite dishes, the atmosphere of Zhug Cleveland enhances the experience. The lively yet comfortable setting, paired with attentive and knowledgeable staff, makes for a memorable dining outing. Whether you're enjoying a quiet dinner or celebrating a special occasion, the ambiance complements the culinary artistry on display.

In all, Zhug Cleveland is a must-visit for anyone seeking a rich, flavorful journey through Middle Eastern cuisine. With its exceptional dishes and inviting atmosphere, it’s a dining destination that leaves a lasting impression, encouraging you to return time...

I had the pleasure of dining at Zhug in Cleveland with my wife and a close friend - and I must say, it was truly exceptional. From the moment we entered, we were greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere, as the sounds of happy chatter emanated from a full house. The cozy and comfortable ambiance really made us feel at home, yet the vibrant energy left me feeling alive and ready for an incredible dining experience.

The zero-proof cocktails were a much-appreciated touch to start the evening off on the right foot, and the featured dishes were an absolute delight. The nigella seed and burnt onion hummus was creamy and rich, and the house-made naan was the perfect accompaniment. The crispy brussel sprouts with cashew cream and spiced cauliflower with raisins and walnuts were standout dishes that left my taste buds dancing with joy.

The Yemenite curry fried chicken was crispy and delicious, with a perfect blend of spices that exploded with flavor. The saffron and date braised lamb was exceptionally tender and melted in my mouth. I was truly blown away by the skill and creativity of the chefs at Zhug.

I must take a moment to highlight the true star of the evening at Zhug - the Yemeni hot sauce Zhug. The sauce was presented to the table for use throughout all courses, and I must say, it was an absolute revelation. The perfect balance of heat and flavor, the sauce added a kick to every dish that elevated the overall experience to new heights.

I enjoyed the depth and complexity of the hot sauce, which perfectly complemented each dish without overwhelming them. It was clear that a great deal of care and attention went into crafting this masterpiece, and it truly stole the show.

To finish off the meal, we indulged in the coconut custard with raspberry coulis, beet, crisp quinoa and cardamom. Every bite was a heavenly mix of flavors and textures that left me wanting more. The Turkish coffee truffles alongside the passable double shot of espresso rounded out the evening and left me feeling completely satisfied.

All in all, I highly recommend Zhug for an exceptional dining experience. The food, atmosphere, and service are all top-notch, and you won't be disappointed. This is truly a five-star restaurant that deserves all the accolades...

Zhug oozes warmth and class, and is probably my favorite of Doug Katz's restaurant ventures. Like his other recent restaurants, it's best enjoyed as a tapas adventure with friends. Unlike his other ventures, they unfortunately are too cool for reservations. There's usually a couple spots open at the bar for the taking, but come with any more than 4 people and your wait on a busy night may be upwards of an hour. If you're lucky, you can find street parking in front on Cedar (free since COVID days), or park in the old Dave's grocery lot across the street (also free).

The dim lighting allows candlelight, plush pillows, and verdant greenery to dominate the atmosphere. The staff are entirely the opposite of the standoffish lot you might imagine would work here - every person we've encountered has been friendly and incredibly accommodating. Also accommodating is the menu, which is vegetarian, gluten-free, and vegan friendly. Although they do have high chairs and children are welcome, it's not an ideal place to bring little rowdy ones since there's quite a bit of glassware and candles, not to mention tight quarters. Two gender-neutral bathrooms are located at the back and kept in orderly condition.

Be prepared to get lost in the sauce, because there are a lot of sauces and dips. A satisfying order usually consists of about 2-3 dishes per person. The usual culprits on our group's order are the Nigella Seed and Burnt Onion Hummus - paired with the complimentary pita bread, and a little dollop of their complimentary zhug (a spicy green Yemeni sauce), this provides a cozy foundation for your stomach as you await the rest of the food. Cauliflower, Roasted Carrots, and Potato Tostones are other delightful, textured bites to get your fiber in and fill up. Protein wise, I'm a huge fan of the Crispy Chicken and its brightly seasoned dipping sauce, as well as the Warm White Beans (more pleasurable than the plain name would suggest) and plump Butter Roasted Shrimp.

Their wine and cocktail menu is tastefully curated, but I've actually never made it to the desserts since we're usually so stuffed after the...
