Watch out Indian food lovers, there is a new boss in town! We were headed towards Front Row for steak night tonight, but Amruth Indian restaurant caught our eye and we decided to give it a whirl. So glad we did; 5šās all around!
Yerra Tokku Shrimp appetizer: dang, this was spicyyy š„µ! We LOVE spicy and we very much enjoyed this dish. I wouldnāt really consider this an appetizer, though, but I would definitely order this again as a meal. Itās just not very āappetizeryā IMO.
Aandhra Chicken Curry (bone in): a very mild dish. We enjoyed this one, but after the spicy appetizer above, this one almost seemed bland, at first. Trust me, itās not; itās just that our mouths were still on fire from the above mentioned appetizer.
Chettinad Goat: I like goat because itās slightly less fatty than lamb, in my experience. It was delicious.
Chili/garlic and butter naāans were delicious.
Parotta: my favorite item of the night was the PAROTTA āflaky ribbon pancakeā. It took me back to my childhood, and Iāll admit I had a moment of š„¹. My grandma handmade scallion pancakes (č±ę²¹é„¼). Itās different than the Korean version (pajeon), which is much chewier and not flaky. Iāve never seen any other culture have a similar pancake to č±ę²¹é„¼. Itās both chewy and flaky at the same time (think like a croissant is both flaky and chewy). Itās really hard to describe unless youāve had it before. I initially saw this menu item, but when I googled an image, the pancake was torn apart and stir fried with a protein and gravy. Thatās not what I was looking for, so I opted to just get Parotta as a side. And then I confirmed with our wonderful server that it actually comes as a whole pancake and not torn apart like the Parotta entrees. I knew right away, when she set it down, that this was very similar to my grandmaās scallion pancakes. When I picked it up and started pulling it apart, it flaked the exact same way. I am definitely going back just for this side item. If you have ever had č±ę²¹é„¼, you know what I am talking about.
Kheer rice pudding dessert: you have to try this if you like hot rice pudding! It was literally the perfect end to an amazing dinner! The rice pudding had raisins, cinnamon and, mostly, just sweet, warm milk and riceā¦it was excellent! The two of us did not leave a drop.
Service and food were a little slow, but they have only been open for a week, and this is their first family restaurant (brother/sister + their spouses). Almost every table was full by the time we left, and all were Indian families except us (which I take to be a positive!).
I definitely think this restaurant needs to print a different style menu. I had to Google a majority of the items, simply because I didnāt know what half the names were. The menu is kind of all over the place, and a little hard to follow. Thankfully, I was waiting for someone else so I had some time on my hands. But I definitely could see people being overwhelmed by this menu and not knowing what to order. We were given something to snack on, I think itās called papad w/ a chutney, but Iām not sure š¤·š»āāļø
We saw an adjacent table order several Dosa, and they looked absolutely delicious. I can only describe it as an oversized, paper thin crĆŖpe, that you tear apart with your fingers and dip in the masala thatās in the center of the pancake. It almost looks like a blown up burrito, but I donāt even know how to describe the Dosas I saw, and Iām probably butchering the description. Dosa will be at the top of my list to try next time, it looked delicious! The poor Grandma at the āDosaā table was laughing at me gawking, I couldnāt stop staring (and possibly droolingā¦donāt judge!)!
Honestly, I have like 10 things I want to go back and try here. Iāll be frequenting for the Parotta, but amongst that also many other delicious sounding entrees. I just need a picture guide to help me with all the names š ā at Amruth Indian...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy daughter and I grabbed a very rare lunch together and we both wanted Indian cuisine because neither of our significant āpeoplesā/losers crave it. After a āweek of weeks that started the week beforeā Indian was the only respite and we could accept no substitute.
We chose Amruth Indian Grill in Clive on Swanson Boulevard, right between The Front Row and Play It Again Sports, at the risk of being pedantically pedantic.
We were happily and warmly greeted by Koushik and he thoroughly explained the menu and specials. Pro tip, youāll need a bookmark and cheaters to fully appreciate and investigate this menu of generous offerings of their prideful cuisine (El Guapo from The Three Amigos would even say there is a plethora of items).
Koushik smiled the entire time he was at our table and even ran back to the chef to check when my daughter was asking the difference between the goat and lamb and which was on the bone or off. My wife is Caribbean so eating around a bone aināt no thang- she didnāt raise no 1st world eaters in this houseā¦.but he was so diligent with making sure she got exactly what she wanted. No joke, it was like sitting at your grandmaās table and she wants to make sure she makes you happy. I instantly loved this dude just like my Grandma Ah-Ha (Sheās not from Oslo).
The food came in massive amounts in the most charming receptacles (my daughter said not to steal them). My daughter ordered the Goat Labadar (on bone) with minimal level of heatā¦it was carefully smothered in onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic and spiced with garam masala, cumin powder, red chili powder, and creamā¦with turmeric and coriander dropping by to say āHey Goat, hey!ā It was succulent and came off the bone in tender bites covered in a savory, delicious sauce.
I opted for the Butter Chicken (boneless as it is) with medium level spice, and this chicken-in cream, tomatoes, and a blend of spices like garam masala, cumin, and turmeric melted in your mouthā¦like butter (say this like Mike Meyers said āLike Buttahā as Linda Richman doing Barbara Striesand). Regard less how you say it, after eating this delectable dish, you wonāt be the way you wereā¦ā¦
We also, in gluttonous fashion, split the Chana Masala, medium spice and some Garlic Nan. The Chana, which is cooked in tomato sauce and curry heaven, is a literal explosion of flavor in your mouth, with the texture of chickpea to blow you back up each time your mouth is close to the ground. Happy to say after ordering medium spice, I no longer have to worry about pesky old man nose hair issuesā¦.SO GOOD!!!!
Somewhere in our inhaling of top notch crafted and cared for food, Anil became our server, though I think, how much he checked that the food, and spice level was to order and pleasure, this was an owner, no doubt. He shared how they have a regular Sunday Buffet (guessing he told us this based on the amount of food on our table, wink) but they also have a Motherās Day special buffet tomorrow too. Anil was so helpful, insistent on how to package our leftovers to ensure that we filled each container properly as to prevent spilling. The first thing we did when we got into the car was spill one of the containers inside the bagā¦yeah he was right onā¦and we didnāt listen apparentlyš„°.
We will soooo be back. This little gem had both our hearts as well as our stomachs, just minus some nose...
