December 2021 - We gave Hidalgo in Urbandale another try. After being given our chips and salsa, we waited 25 minutes for them to ask us for our drink order. I don't know what's so difficult about a water and Diet Coke. When the food finally arrived, mine was good; but Jim wasn't impressed. We looked around at a few other tables. The other patrons had scowls and weren't happy with their long waits either. One table had been given the wrong food and had to wait even longer. A cook was new and the female waitress couldn't refill our drink orders; I don't know why.
Summer 2021 - On Sunday, my husband and I ate at Hidalgo again, but it was our worst experience at Hidalgo. (Hidalgo in Ankeny still provides great customer service and the food was delicious.) We are a regular so I didn't need to look at the menu. We waited 10 minutes for a beverage and 15 for salsa/chips. Just so you know, the zone works in basketball, but not when providing service at a restaurant. No one came back to check on our food, and we had to ask for refills for beverages. We waited and waited for our check. The couple beside us just got up and went to the register to pay without their bill. They were ticked! My food wasn't as good as usual. My husband tried something new and the chicken/steak/shrimp entree was dry. Bye-bye. Hidalgo in Ankeny,...
Read moreThe service...oh my! Completely ignored after being seated. Watched 2 other tables get drinks before we even saw anyone for our drink order. Drinks and chips/salsa were then gone before our order was taken, once again we were forgot about. Finally our food order was taken and another round of house margaritas were ordered. About 20 minutes later our food comes. My chile rellano, a fried fish is cold, not warm, cold! Our sizzling fajitas are not sizzling at all. My kids enchilada meal was at least warm.
Sadly, the food had promise and was tasty even though it had died in the warming window.
Then after the server asks how everything was, I tried politely to let him know of our disappointment and what had happened. He then goes into defense mode about how our drinks were more complicated than the other tables...2 bottled pops and 2 of the house $2 margaritas are complicated??? He also said, the fajitas were warm right? Wow!!
I basically ended with I'll take my bill now and he came back and said they had comped 2 of the $2 margaritas. No apologies about cold food or getting forgot about. Unbelievable, and we were so excited to try a new place...since we always go to Viva and El Rodeo.
We won't be back...
Read moreSticky menus. Slow service. ( we were not seated, we went and sat, we waited more than twenty minutes). Average food. My son and I ordered a Hidalgo Molcajete to share...it states it is made of "tender slices of steak, grilled chicken, chorizo and shrimp with mexican onion and nopal in red sauce and topped with panela cheese tureado chiles and cheese quesadilla"....it was more than 50% green bell pepper...four medium shrimp, two thin slices of chicken 3"x3", two slices of beef (shirt steak) 3"x3" two small grilled chiles, two grilled bulb onions, a palm sized piece of nopal, one small sized empanada and a piece of cheese...there was maybe a half cup of red sauce in the bottom with minimal chorizo. $16.99....very small and skimpy (and there should not have been any bell pepper) We have ordered Molcajete at other places with four times this for two-thirds the price. We...
