Jim's Place has been around forever in a few locations. This is my favorite (and only current) iteration. It feels "nice", but is fairly casual. I usually go from business casual to a sport coat depending on how I want to feel.
A very comfortable atmosphere. Not too loud, not so quiet you feel like everyone can hear you. Even the booths by the bar are nice.
The food is very lightly Mediterranean, and fairly upscale. The menu isn't huge, but everything on it they do well. That's something I love in a restaurant.
My go-to dishes are the lamb and the fish with the Mediterranean topping depending on the weather and my mood. Both avoid the "I could do this better at home" and are a nice change of pace. The Mediterranean topping sounds like it would overwhelm the fish flavor, but it doesn't. And their catch of the day is almost always some great fresh Gulf fish like redfish, real snapper, etc. that's hard for mere mortals to buy.
I do always pay attention to the specials. They can be interesting, and are really good... not "we need to get rid of this" specials.
The sides are all really good. Hashbrowns, which are their "thing," are an underrated potato side to a nice meal. I got the Brussel sprouts with them for a change last time. I love them roasted, but then there was a restaurant trend to over-sweeten them. They nailed the sweet/bitter balance which made me very happy.
The wine selection isn't vast, but you can always find a few by-the-glass that you'd like, goes well with the meal, and hit a few price points. Lately restaurants with large selections limit the by-the-glass selections so much, and my wife and I have very different tastes.
They have a decent variety of cocktails, but that's not really my thing. The bar is always busy and I know people that love it.
Prices have jumped up significantly from a few years ago, but it is completely on-par with the industry trends.
You do need to make a reservation these days, but I've gotten them easily the day before.
When my wife and I get a date night away from the kids and aren't feeling like trying something exotic or pricey, with a long drive from the 'burbs, this is our go-to. A safe place you know you'll always be happy with in the...
Read moreThere aren't many upscale dining restaurants in Collierville, and Jim's Place has always been our go-to place with friends or for special occasions. Last night, however, they failed miserably. First thing I noticed was no masks. I realize this is no longer mandated, but Jim's is the first business (especially one serving food) that I have been in where employees were not wearing masks. It was downhill from there; except for the prices, which definitely got higher. It's always cold in the place, but being 90+ outside, I forgot my sweater so first thing, I ordered a cup of hot tea to warm up. Fine, but the entire time we were there, no one offered to refill my cup. While we sat waiting for dinner, our waiter asked if we would like some bread. Seriously? This used to be brought automatically without having to ask. When our salads arrived, there was no more than one tablespoon of dressing dropped on top. I could not get our waiter's attention for more dressing before the entres arrived so half the salad went uneaten. The Alaskan halibut was "okay", but for $31 not anything to rave about; mashed potatoes were over-whipped and bland. I think what really pi**ed me off was dessert. I ordered the cheese cake to go. It comes with a cherry topping. Well, the little cup with the topping looked like it had been emptied and I got what was left on the bottom. No kidding, there was no more than 1/2 teaspoon just covering the bottom of the cup. And the cheesecake was stale! $10 thrown in the garbage. This was my birthday dinner. My husband told me later that he had requested a small cake be brought to our table. We didn't get that either. This dinner was well over $100 + tip. It's what you can expect to pay for upscale dining. But "upscale" dining means good food, good service, fresh food, and NO skimping. I will think twice before returning to...
Read moreIt took a minute for me to decide whether or not to write this review, as I’m a fairly regular Jim’s patron, and usually everything is on point. But anyway, here goes. Saturday night, April 12, my 21 year old son and I show up a few minutes early for our 8 pm reservation in the bar/lounge area and were seated right away. Our server was awesome, although I’m terrible with names and don’t recall hers. Drinks by Christina were great, as usual. I noticed it didn’t seem as busy as usual but atmosphere was still pretty good. Food…I ordered the crab cakes appetizer and my son ordered chargrilled or charbroiled oysters. Crab cakes were great but the oysters, not so much. For our entrees I ordered a medium rare ribeye w/ spinach and a house salad. My son ordered medium rare lamb chops and not sure of his sides. The sides were good but my steak and his lamb chops were cooked rare. Very rare. I ate mine anyway but the lamb chops were just too rare for my son so we decided to send them back to the kitchen. Server agreed that they were very rare and said no problem. When the lamb chops were brought back they were cooked well done and the bones to the chops were burned to a crisp. Completely black and literally would break if you tried to pick one up or maneuver it on the plate. I don’t know if there was a different cook that night (we always order medium rare) or if it made him/her mad that we sent them back. Anyway, it was nowhere near cooked medium rare either time. Very disappointing experience for spending $300 for two people to dine. I didn’t say anything to our server because it absolutely had nothing to do with her and I wasn’t looking to have the bill adjusted. My point is simply something was off on Saturday night, the 12th. My hopes are that management can identify what exactly that was and correct the issues. We will be...
