Update on 7/6/24: Tried again and writing a review on request of the owner… I want to be honest and true with my review. I like my non-veg appetizers to be dry and as a snackable item otherwise there’s not much difference between an appetizer and a curry.. I got Kottimeer (cilantro) chicken and it was nothing but a gravy consistency, too wet chicken dish with cilantro garnished on top.. I don’t think I’ll order this again.. Zero flavor or kick.. it was way too mild and the consistency made me not try more than one bite
I also ordered boneless chicken biryani again and specifically said to make it spicy before ordering.. What I received was a mild biryani with no kick or heat to it and even the biryani is all wet and gravy chicken curry with biryani flavor rice placed on top…Its clearly cooked separately and placed some rice on top.. Not sure why everything has to be so runny and wet..
I’ve been ordering food at Amruta Vilas at least 3-4 times a month for quite some time now and I mostly order chicken or goat biryanis and like them all except chicken kheema biryani made with peas which wasn’t good at all.. I’ve pretty much tried most things on their menu and loved almost everything except non-veg thali with zero taste, peanut chutneys that come with South Indian tiffins that tasted burnt peanuts once and tasted stale on multiple occasions and chicken kheema peas biryani which wasn’t good at all..
I also quite often order large quantity trays so I’m a well known face at this restaurant.. The young college going girls who work there are very welcoming and friendly who offer pretty decent service.. One of the owner guys is also super friendly and treats well since I order quite frequently..
Couple days ago I placed a to-go order for a chicken biryani tray and a shrimp appetizer which was $19. I was quite shocked to see a gravy curry looking shrimp dish with a very minimum quantity making me wonder if that was even my order.. I legit thought they mixed up my order for someone else.. I live super close by so I called only to make sure I didn’t pick up a wrong order.. To my surprise one of the other owner guys named Anoop spoke with me and said they usually make their appetizers with 14 shrimp (mine had 11) and that he would check his CCTV cameras to see if they really gave me 14 shrimp.. I could not believe that was his response like I care for 3 shrimp and as if I was lying.. The guy clearly doesn’t handle customer concerns quite well for sure… I don’t even eat seafood of any kind and I only order it for my family and I must say I was disappointed more at him than my order itself..
Also I was told party tray orders get a 10% discount if paid in cash when I tried paying with my card in the past but I still used my card since I didn’t know this before and didn’t have enough cash.. This time when I brought cash for my party order, I can tell this other owner guy wasn’t too happy to honor that for me which was offered 2weeks before by their own staff..
I come here for convenience but I guess it’s time for me to explore other...
Read moreIt was very disappointing to pay $2.99 for a small, 4 ounce, styrofoam foam of the Chai and be denied refills. This should have definitely been communicated up front since every other Indian restaurant gives free refills on these. One of the servers went on about how long the process takes and how they supposedly lose money on the Chai still. Whatever the reason, they should inform you before ordering that there are no refills or just put it on the menu.
The decor here is very lacking and the layout in general is very sloppy. Being served in a styrofoam cup, lukewarm Sam’s water bottles, and plastic plates and bowls didn’t really add any points to the ambiance of the restaurant either. There were also a bunch of mark-outs and changes on the menu that were made with sharpie, very surprising considering how new this place is.
As far as the food, the rice was just plain white rice, unlike other Indian restaurant that use various spices and ghee to flavor their rice. The garlic naan tasted and looked pre-made as if they just heated it up from frozen. The samosas gave me the same impression.
The curries themselves tasted fairly good; however, receiving less than 10 small pieces of paneer in the Butter Paneer and only 3 pieces of lamb in the Lamb Korma was disappointing.
The service was pretty slow and we were ignored for a good amount of time before being able to order our entrees and when attempting to get our check at the end.
All in all, I do not see this place lasting in its current state. I do hope it is able to fix its issues, since it would be great to have a restaurant comparable to Bombay House in Cordova right around the corner from us. However, I will not be...
Read moreThis local Indian restaurant is very good. I visited with work friends that ate chicken dishes that they all loved. I loved all my vegan and gluten free options I have tried so far. The appetizer was like an cake that is not sweet that you dip in three different sauces. I will probably try the other appetizer gf vegan option next time, but it was good for what it is. The veggie curry options come with rice and are very delicious. The sauce is thicker and veggies are bigger than other Indian restaurants I have visited in the area. It makes it taste better and more substantial. I also like that the veggies are large enough and feels like you are eating what they say is in the dish. It is a good sauce to vegetable ratio. The flavor tastes authentic, and they ask for your desired spice level. I asked for mild to medium and it had just the right amount of kick. The people were very accommodating, and they verified with the chef to make sure my dietary restrictions could be met. I will definitely be back and recommend to others. Someone in my party commented that the music and atmosphere made them feel like they were transported to another place. The cultural music and atmosphere also add to the experience. However, we could still hold a conversation, so it was not distracting us from having an enjoyable conversation with our meal. I am sure we will be back, since everyone commented how much they...
