Senor Rafael at the Mexican Inn — Restaurant in Colorado

After realizing my favorite Mexican place was sadly closed i was hungry and not knowing of any good Mexican spots i googled and found this place. The pictures didn't tell me much but there are a lot of positive reviews so I reluctantly checked it out cause if you know good Mexican you know these reviews don't say much of anything, just my opinion. Anyhow the place is small, seemed clean, smelled like disinfectant so that's good. Just a note, they were playing country music, this is not typical of authentic Mexican restaurants. They had horchata, a delicious rice drink, and it was good. I got the "small combo plate" I tried the chile relleno and the cheese enchilada, I asked for green chile on the relleno and wanted red sauce on my enchilada but just got green on both, fine whatever. The relleno i could fit in my palm and it was not a typical relleno it was wrapped in either a tortilla or rice paper and deep fried with some kind of yellow cheese, not good and no thank you! The enchilada was literally warmed stuffed with cheese and a whole onion and rolled with cheese and lettuce and I'm assuming the put the plate through some kind of warmer, again not made very well just a rolled tortilla then slopped with sauce. My plate didn't include rice and beans, but this was a positive cause my friend got rice and beans and the beans are not made in house, they were not good!

People, this is not good authentic Mexican. Trust me, I know. You can tell the attention to detail and you can taste the love and care people put into a dish. It's like a traditional thing, this place is a, let's open cans and warm it up kind of place! I can see it being decent if it was no more then 5 bucks for what I had but it was double that. I'm surprised by the number of people who had a good experience at this restaurant. It was the worst Mexican "style" food I've ever had in my lifetime, and when I told the woman cashier how terrible the food was and the enchiladas were cold (both of them) she said it was because, "you put that cold salsa on them." This was a stupid remark, when someone obviously felt displeased with their meal. I only ate a small amount of the food, and they didn't have the decency to knock off a few bucks. Most good restaurants, when they get a complaint like I made (rarely do this) won't even charge you for the meal. They also charge $3.50 extra for rice and beans if you don't get a dinner, and charged me $2.50 for a diet soda. Their chiles, given to me as someone who had never had eaten there before, came in those tiny plastic cups and were tasteless, utterly without any flavor and sticky, terrible. I won't even describe in detail the enchiladas, except to say they were without any substance or favor, as were the chips (can't even serve a decent tortilla chip ?). The food was cheaply prepared, cheap, cheap, cheap, money making operation and they don't seem to care. Oh, the cashier also sarcastically wished that I have a great evening. April 2024. Staff always friendly and restroom clean. Cheese enchilada was great but chicken in taco was blah. Overall, food is acceptable but like the Aunt who tries but is just an okay cook, I wouldn't bring guests that I want to impress. Salsa is good and chips fresh. Generous portions. Check out the Happy Hour. May 2023 Parking lot is packed so took a while to get our food. Shared a combo plate. Very good 😊. Will try to come either early or later next time. Update September 2022: new phone number and elevated new pricing. Staff a little confused today. Generally great service and good food 👍 First chips and salsa no extra charge. Love the street tacos and the basic burrito and the junior tacorito. Yummy green chile and good iced tea. Our new favorite. June 2022 visit: Met relatives from out of town there and only glitch was the payment app. Server was not in a good mood so we waited until I got in line to pay. I prefer a paper receipt but they don't offer it.
