I'll start this off with what I told Mr. Butcher.
It has been over 35 years since I last ate a non-green bean and liked it. Every bean I have tried in other restaurants or cooked by family or friends has been disgusting, regardless of bean or cooking...until now. I spoke with him about the texture and feel of previous beans and dishes. I lauded him for giving me a new hope for bean dishes with his Red Beans & Rice.
The cabbage was good, but much better imho, on the Po' Boy with a bit of spicy mayo. I will admit my first bias. I do love the tangy crunch a sauerkraut or coleslaw can provide.
My ex used to get Popeye's Po' Boy, beans & rice, etc. As Crocodile Dundee almost said, "That's not a po' boy (Popeye's). That's a Po' Boy (Creole Kitchen)."
Jambalaya. This is the best "red sauce" sausage gravy I have had. I say that because this is a wonderful comfort food adaptable to many types of meals. It's also healthier than sausage gravy.
I heard the 610 WTVN Friday restaurant review from the late John Corby. I finally tracked down this hidden gem.
The man who's name is on the sign is amiable, engaging, inviting, open-hearted and willing to talk with you (when he can) about how we all are closer to one another than we think.
What I appreciated the most has to do with another bias: feeling welcomed at home. For the second time, and first while reviewing, I have tipped more than the cost of the meal.
I don't know the man from Adam. It doesn't matter, because Mr. Butcher, as a brother, you are a gentle...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy parents were both born and raised in south Louisiana, Cajuns through and through. I grew up eating cajun and creole food. I never imagined I'd find a little piece of home in Columbus, Ohio. Let's start with their beignets. They'd make Cafe du Monde proud. They're soft and light and served warm with plenty of powdered sugar. I had the shrimp po-boy for lunch today. The shrimp was plump, the breading perfectly seasoned and crisp. The sauce was delicious. The bread wasn't exactly like you'd get in New Orleans, but it was close enough. Large portion size. I got the house potato chips instead of the fries, and was happy with the choice. You don't get a chance to eat homemade potato chips often. They're a little spicy, but oh so good. The crawfish etoufee tastes like my dad's always did, dark and spicy and full of flavor. I got them to make it as spicy as they go and wasn't disappointed. This cajun girl RARELY sweats, but that etoufee certainly got my brow wet. I loved every bite. And you guys. The gumbo. Chef Butcher gets his roux JUST RIGHT and you can tell with every spoonful. Today's gumbo, chicken and andouille, made me want to cry happy tears. A lot of people make "gumbo", but it's never gumbo the way I know it. Creole Kitchen's gumbo brought me back to my childhood, with my dad cooking a big pot of gumbo on a cold, wet day. I can't promise that everyone will love Creole Kitchen as much as I do, but I can promise that Chef Butcher knows what he's doing when he's cooking cajun and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe best catfish ever!
This was my second time at Chef Butcher's Creole Kitchen.
We went for dinner for the first time and got catfish and chicken jambalaya, both were spicy/hot but the catfish taste soo good. I'm not a big fan of spicy food but I have to say that I couldn't stop eating (and drinking water of course!) ; )
This time we went there for breakfast because I wanted to try french toast. (If you follow my profile, you'll see that I try to go for french toast all the time). It was great! I have to say that the batter was awesome, the bread was cut very thick but still soaked all the batter in, super moist! Crispy bacon also my favorite :D
My husband got catfish again, I didn't want to try it at first because I don't like to switch from sweet to savory and back to sweet again, but he kept pushing me to try and I wanted to say that this is the best! I can have it everyday! The breading was super crispy, the fish didn't smell or taste any fishy at all, felt like I was eating chicken but lighter & healthier.
And another best part about the restaurant is the meal is very affordable, we spent around $25 (excluding tips) !
We love the food and and Antoinette, she's the best! Her dad too! Will definitely go back there...
