Very excited to try out Shang Shan after reading online reviews and was not disappointed. We wanted to try something different from our usual haunts and were very happy with our first take-out experience. The food quality was excellent, and portions were generous! Ordering from the website was actually a pleasant experience, which isn't normally the case. I particularly enjoyed the fact that you could order items in two sizes, small or large and that as you added items to your order, the price changes were reflected in real-time, including the options for free bonus items after spending $30, $40, etc.
We decided on small mixed veggies with steamed rice, a large teriyaki chicken with fried rice, an egg roll, and a spring roll.
The mixed veggies were steamed and not deep-fried (a huge plus!). They also came with large pieces of fried tofu, which was a bonus as the website menu did not mention that. Not sure if it was a mistake but we loved it. The veggies were lightly seasoned, not swimming around in a sea of thickened sauce like so many other places. The steamed rice was clearly freshly made.
The teriyaki chicken was sauteed thigh meat (or dark meat), which always tastes better than the bland and boring breast meat, in our opinion. The dish was served with a light gravy with a ton of thinly sliced sauteed onions, a perfect match flavor-wise. The fried rice was good, but we generally prefer steamed rice.
I found the egg roll smaller in size and a little doughy, but the spring roll was fried to perfection and relatively standard.
It is worth mentioning that Shang Shan's menu has an entire section of fried chicken, which was intriguing, and we decided to try it the next time we order.
The interior of the restaurant isn't much to look at. It's not particularly inviting for a sit-down experience. Still, simple changes like softer lighting using lower color temperature bulbs would be a bonus. To counter the fish-bowl effect, some window treatments, like half-size screens or half-size light-diffusing cling film, would be worth consideration. A small host stand and/or a tri-fold screen would help provide some separation between the entrance and the dining area and likely encourage me to stay and enjoy a meal. I do want to point out that the restaurant was spotless!
Having said that, the service was welcoming, friendly, and prompt. The food was hot, fresh, and delicious. You need to give this place a try; we...
Read moreWhen I tell you all, this was the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had and the service was not any better… I came into this establishment in the evening as I was craving General tso chicken and l crab Rangoon.
First of all, when I came in the manager looked at me like I was crazy for even walking in there as if I shouldn’t have been there. I brushed it off and continued to order but that should have been a red flag. When the crab Rangoon came out, there was barely any cream cheese or crab meat in the Rangoon! If you look at the picture I took, you can tell that they are pretty small and the red sauce was so bland it was not good at all.
When my general tso chicken came out, it was very oily and when I went to take a bite I could tell they had mixed the sauce with water to try to thin it out or make it last longer. Either way it was disgusting and bland and I was very disappointed and will not be returning. If you have time, please take a look at the pictures and videos I have uploaded with this review so that you can see for yourself.
I also want to add that the dining area was not inviting at all and I spent almost $25 for food I...
Read moreMe and my wife have been going to this Chinese restaurant since it opened, it is our go to Chinese place. I am from a small village in Britain where we eat Chinese food a lot as our country is very multicultural, I can say since coming to the US 3 years ago this is the best Chinese and closest to the British Chinese food I'm used too. 20/10 definitely recommend you check it out and keep an open mind, a lot of the other Chinese places me and my wife have been to are terrible portions and rubbish quality but this is by far the best I've had and is now our go to Chinese place, the owner is super friendly you just need to get to know him and the food is brilliant. The owner seems a bit shy at first but every time we enter the owner smiles and greets us, the atmosphere is always really calming and peaceful and the food is always...
