Husker Steak House — Restaurant in Columbus

As new arrivals in this state, the first two times my wife and I ate here the experience was great. After that even with a reservation and arriving early and waiting by the counter for 45 minutes they still told us they had no table for us that we could sit back by the bar now or wait another 30-45 minutes. We noticed upon entering and while we were waiting, there was a table in the front with a reserved sign on it that we asked about several times. Eventually we said we would look at the table back by the bar. After seating and ordering we learned it happened to be right next to the smokers exit which was opened very often and was very cold and the smoke was unbearable. We asked several times to be moved and were told there were no tables available. There were 4-5 tables that needed clearing and cleaning off. They weren’t in a hurry to do it, so we stayed in the same spot. The next time we came (also with a reservation) while waiting we eventually told the “hostess” about the previous experience and she said “well next time don’t sit there”. This was after waiting 45 minutes (30 mins after our reservation time). We waited @ 15-20 minutes longer asking when our table would be ready and they couldn’t tell us so we left. Is this how they treat their customers? I’d like to hear what the owner says about this! We haven’t...

First time here, but I am seriously impressed with how great this place is. Doesn’t have much curb appeal, but has the negative qualities for a great restaurant on the inside.

The food was reasonably priced and very well prepared. The wait staff were fast, but not rushed, filling water when low, but not excessively frequently. Each course arrived on a comfortably relaxed, yet prompt cadence. Perfect balance of time to enjoy conversation and the food before the next course arrived. The dessert selection was small, yet competent with chocolate cake, an apple tart and a pie available. The warm apple tart with two scoops of vanilla ice cream was the most popular at the table.

The atmosphere was refreshing for a restaurant; relaxing earthtones and NO music in the background. Conversation could be conducted at a reasonable level without feeling like one has to be loud to be heard. Not sure i would call it romantic, but you can certainly enjoy a quiet dinner for two without distraction.

Recommended by my therapist, Kelly, in Council Bluffs, IA. She said her folks go there all the time. My wife wanted prime rib, but they had just run out. She asked for a prime rib sandwich. They had that. Was bigger than she expected and was plenty. It was excellent. I had a hamburger steak and it was the BEST one I have ever had and I have eaten a ton of them. Also mashed potatoes were homemade and delicious. I don’t care for mushrooms, so ordered them on the side. They were even good. It was our first time eating here but definitely not the last. Our waitress Amy(Connie) was the best. I called her Connie because she looked like Country Singer Connie Smith. Also met a very pleasant couple celebrating their 62nd Anniversary.
