The Kitchen New Orleans Soul-food & Cajun — Restaurant in Converse

First time visitor! Right off the jump, they need to lose the styrofoam bowls and the aluminum foil to cover. I lost most of the juice in my food in the bag. All containers should be like the gumbo container, WITH A LID! Secondly, it’s located in a gas station, so expectations were not high. I ordered the Gumbo (chicken, sausage, rice), it wasn’t spicy and the roux was a little watery to me. I also had the Dirty Rice, it was moist just like I like it and the best of what I ordered. I also ordered the Cajun Corn which was not bad and had some cajun flavor to it. Finally, I tried the Red Beans and Rice, it was just okay. The price points are pretty good. I don’t think anything is prepared on-site with the exception of items that need to go in a deep fryer. If it has “Cajun” in the title, it’s probably going to be spicy. It’s a Black Owned Business so I’ll likely go back and try some...

Ok, so this is in a gas station. So you are not sitting down and eatin'. But who cares. As small businesses go, this gas station hole in the wall delivers. I got the catfish and shrimp po-boy with a side of red beans and rice. The person (owner?) was super eager to take my order. She was awesome and you could tell she cared about what you were eating. And if you want something that is down right tasty, and sure fire delicious. This hit it out the park. My god I was in heaven. Now a down home virginia boy knows a little (just a little!!) about some good food. And taste is everything. Sitting in my car devouring this little slice of perfection. And the peach cobbler was pretty good too. Much better than the typical gas station...

Can’t wait to try more of the menu but I got the catfish, 6 shrimp, fried okra, and green beans! This plate was well worth the price because I was able to get two meals from it. The catfish batter was perfectly seasoned, and I know it may look a little dark in the picture, but I assure you it was not overcooked. Not one item was over battered and they all tasted great! The green beans had a little kick to them but nothing overpowering. Some might say the green beans were salty, but I didn’t mind it, so just make sure to taste it before trying to add anything more. The only reason I’m giving the atmosphere 3 stars is because I wish this was a restaurant you could sit down at to really enjoy your meal! Perfection everywhere...
