Went there on a Saturday at lunchtime. This is the old location for New China and without the buffet bars the place is huge. They have the makings of a stage and looks the the empty bar is waiting on a liquor license. Tables are spread out generously and the décor is a bit campy. They have plastic fish hanging from the ceiling and paper table covers with their crab printed on them.
I got the 1/2 lb. boiled shrimp and a side dish of Gumbo. The server said the breaded shrimp had a light coating of breading, but I went with boiled. They have 5 levels of "hot/spicy" on the shrimp so I did Cajun style with Medium Spicy.
The shrimp came out and tasted fresh but the Medium spice just wasn't there. I got no hint of pepper really, so next time I'll get the Extra Spicy. The gumbo had a lot of flavors going on but again, not hot at all. I wasn't offered hot sauce but the shrimp did come with cocktail sauce. I'd order both again, but I'd request hot sauce.
I got Shrimp, Gumbo and a Coke - the total before tax was just over $23 and change so it is a little pricey. I think the 1/2 lb. of boiled shrimp was $11, but it was fresh shrimp just like you'd find on the coast. Service was great and the server did recommend the Extra Spicy for my next visit. I'll go back...
Read moreThe seafood was great! Ordered a handful of different meats and none of that was short of amazing. My partner was raving about the flavor of the snow crab. I liked it too, but she is the crab connoisseur. If not for the macaroni and cheese, this would have definitely been 5 stars on the rating. That was inedible. The vinegar taste...? The staff was helpful, informative, answered all my family's extra questions, and was just outright pleasant.
The only suggestion (but not a complaint) is maybe offering trays. Really helpful thing that some do with meaty orders. It would really help out. Especially for those, like us, who were looking for something in the hotels next to you. The five of us had to take turns eating basically because it would have been way too messy (and likely resulted in extra fees for staining the bed linens/coverings). Honestly, though I wouldn't want to pay extra for the tray, I would (within reason) without complaining, just for the sake of convenience and alleviating my fear that some of that amazing juicy sauce would result in me owning a new $250 used...
Read moreAte there today with a large party. They were not busy. It took an hour to get an appetizer. Our waitress was awful. She never checked on us after the food was brought. We finally had to ask someone cleaning a table to get her because our drinks had been empty for quite some time. Food was good except for the crawfish. They tasted like they had been warmed up from an earlier batch. They automatically added 18% gratuity because it was a group of 13. The waitress made something like 50 or 60 bucks tip on our ticket alone. If the tip is a sure thing why does she care if our drinks are full? There was another group at our table so i bet she made at least 20 bucks tip off their ticket too. For a 500.00+ table we should have been taken care of much better than that. We needed a to go bag but we knew better than to wait for the waitress to come back so we used one of the plastic bags on the table that the food was brought out in. Awful service is a nice way to put it. My husband told me when we left that he would never return. Our experience...
