I read through a lot of the reviews and decided to give this a try. Weeks went by and as I was driving into cove and pulled right in to the parking lot. When I opened my door I was met with this breath taking smell of hawaiian bbq. Walking into through the front door I was immediately greeted not only by staff but the huge menu too. After studying the menu I decided on the number 2 for myself which included, a pork rib, chicken katsu, rice and macaroni salad . My husband also got a number two but with brisket, kalua pork and a double salad. He enjoyed his plate a lot! The salad was crispy and fresh, the pork and brisket were super tender and flavorful. As for mine...katsu was nicely breaded and crunchy, the rib was fall off the bone (literally) but the sauce had an acidic background but not a lot of flavor. My sides were rice, which is fluffy and sticky. On it was a type of teriyaki sauce and wow it was good!! The other was macaroni salad which had a creamy texture but again no flavor. I also ordered 1 egg role and 1 spam musubi. The egg roll I feel was like something you get when you order chinese and the musubi was meh. The musubi rice to meat ratio was way off and the meat was barely on the other side of cooked. Honestly this place has the potential to be good just have to add seasoning to some stuff. I will be back for the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreSo I got the mix plate with a spam musubi and a soda for around $14, and all I can say was that it was underwhelming...and bland. I know my way around Hawaiian food (I even worked at a L&L Hawaiian BBQ on Oahu) and they are just missing the crucial flavors needed. The kalua pork tasted like a kalua pork...without the salt! Kalua pork not being salty is like Mexican food without the spice. Next, the mac salad was very slimy and again, BLAND. No tang, not even a little salty, just bland. It also had an aftertaste that I know all to well that comes from mac salad that has been sitting out for a while. The rice was nice, but it's hard to mess up rice. The BBQ chicken resembled nothing of the traditional Hawaiian BBq chicken I knew off. It tasted like Texas BBQ chicken, because it was not as sweet. The brisket was the last item I tasted and it was chewy, and had a funny texture that no other good brisket I had before had. The spam musubi I ordered was okay, if not for the awful tasting seaweed wrap they use, that had a toilet-y aftertaste. My recommendation, take off the seaweed and eat it with caution of the rice falling. I will go back another time to try other various items (such as the Katsu and teri beef and chicken), but I am disappointed with the quality of the food I got. Hopefully my next time ordering...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI ordered a #2 - Pork ribs, Chicken katsu, double rice, double mac. I think if you want a decent amount of food for a reasonable price, this is the place to go :). Having said that, this is the second time Iāve eaten here, but I donāt think Iāll return for a third. The ābanana lumpiaā was mostly wrapper but still cost $1.50 a piece. The mac salad was very al dente this time around - I donāt know if thatās just how they make it here now, but it was disappointing. Iāve been very nostalgic for home and the mac salad just made me feel even more aware that Iām not in HI anymore. Maybe I seem dramatic, but for me, the mac salad is the cornerstone of a good plate lunch lol! I do realize not everyone makes mac salad the same or has the same preferences... Otherwise, this place usually has a very friendly staff and a clean facility, as far...
