If you're on the hunt for authentic Roman-style pizzas reminiscent of your recent culinary adventures in Italy, look no further than Sugo Pizzas in Costa Mesa. After indulging in the delights of Roman and Neapolitan pizzas and pastas during a month-long tour of the central and southern Italy, our expectations were high, but Sugo did not disappoint. Situated at the intersection of Paularino and Bistrol, Sugo offers a delectable selection of Roman-style pizzas that could rival those found in Rome itself. Despite initial skepticism, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality and authenticity of their offerings. From the moment you take your first bite, you'll be transported back to the cobbled streets of Italy. We sampled an array of pizzas, including the Potato, Italian Sausage & Pepperoni, and Margarita varieties, each bursting with flavor and expertly crafted toppings. The crust, with its perfect crunch, serves as an ideal canvas for the mouthwatering ingredients that adorn it. What sets Sugo apart is not only its dedication to traditional Roman pizza but also its innovative approach. In addition to classic options, they offer Japanese and Hawaiian influenced styles, providing a unique twist on a beloved classic. Convenience is also a priority at Sugo. You have the option to order for takeout and bake at home, ensuring that you can enjoy their exquisite pizzas whenever the craving strikes. Whether you're planning a casual lunch, a cozy dinner, or an all-hands meeting, Sugo is the perfect choice. With its authentic flavors, impeccable quality, and diverse menu, it's a culinary experience not to be missed. We wholeheartedly recommend Sugo for your next dining adventure. Buon appetito!

If you haven't yet ventured to Sugo, a Roman-style pizza place in Costa Mesa, you're missing out on a slice of heaven. This isn't your run-of-the-mill pizza joint; it's a gourmet experience that starts 72 hours before you take your first bite. The dough, meticulously crafted to perfection, forms the foundation for a pizza that is light, airy, and full of flavor. Each bite feels like a culinary embrace, leaving you marveling at how something so simple can taste so extraordinary. The fresh ingredients only add to the magic, with toppings that range from classic to innovative. Now, let's talk about their cheese. It's flavorful, and melts perfectly, complementing the crust in a symphony of taste and texture. After seeing an IG post from FOODAGRAMMER, the seasonal peach pizza was the reason I drove from SD. It's a delightful blend of sweet and savory, with juicy peaches that taste like they've just been plucked from the orchard. It's my personal favorite and an absolute must-try. Despite indulging in a full meal, I left feeling satisfied but not weighed down. This pizza has a way of filling you up without making you feel heavy, a testament to the quality and care put into each pie slice. Be sure to look beyond the half baked pizzas displayed on the counter, they have delicious make to order pizzas, try the truffle pizza! In a world full of pizza places, this one stands out not just for its taste, but for its dedication to the craft. So, do yourself a favor and treat your taste buds to Sugo.

It's not that good, to be honest. I saw all the rave online, and so we went to try it. The first time we went on a Saturday at 1 pm and they were sold out. It's annoying but understandable. Finally went on a weekday, which, when we arrived, barely had a line. 1. Took us 20 min to order. Mind you, there were only 3 people in front of us. They only set up one person in the front who was tasked to take orders both in person and by phone, put the chosen pizza in boxes so they can send it to the back to heat up/cook. 2. Our order took 35 minutes to come out, too long considering we only ordered 4 pieces: Pepperoni, Salami, their "Meat Lovers" and a Procuitto. About 4/5 parties after us in line got their orders WAY ahead of us, and it was so frustrating. When we finally got our order, we expected a lot but the pizza literally was nothing special. Out of all 4 we ordered, the salami one was the best but definitely not worth waiting so long and potentially coming and them be closed and sold out. Also, too pricey for mediocre pizza. PLENTY of places in Costa Mesa are better pizza's (ex. Prince St Pizza). This was not worth the wait and the popularity. I think the hype is whatever, it seems to be popular because of their rotating flavors. Good to try once, but ill pass. PS: shout out to the guy who works in the front, I think he often has a hat (Yankees hat if we're being specific). Pretty kind guy, makes sure everyone is served well.

Wowowowowow. Loved it! SUCH UNIQUE PIZZA

The crust is unlike any other! I've truly never had anything like it. It's thicker like a deep dish pizza (but not as thick), but much airier and lighter, and a bit chewy like bread, and CRUNCHY! Such a satisfying texture. Reminds me almost of super crunchy and less thick focaccia. I'M OBSESSED!

I ended up trying the following flavors: Carnivora Slice, Contadina, Chorizo Pastor, Aloha, and the Rosa. ALL OF THEM WERE DELICIOUS! It's truly hard for me to pick my favorite as I think it will probably come down to personal preferences as well. Again, Sugo's pizza is so special and different compared to other pizzas I've had.

The Aloha slice (mozzarella, Italian ham, fresh fresno chilis, green onions, sriracha aioli, pickled pineapple, furikake) was one of the best hawaiian slices I've ever had! Loved the use of prosciutto and the abundance of fresh pineapple, chilis, and green onions on top. Helped it feel more light and fresh compared to other pizzas!

The Rosa slice (vodka sauce, purple onions, fresh basil, parmigiano) was simple, but delicious. No frills, no fuss, just a good base of pizza. I loved the vodka sauce with the sweet, crunchy purple onions. So simple, so good.

The Carnivora slice (Italian sausage, pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, house made tomato sauce) was a delicious, meaty slice. Pepperoni is great, but man is there sausage good here! Definitely recommend getting a slice with sausage on it.

The Contadina (italian sausage, caramelized onions, aged parmigiano and chopped chives) was one of my favorite slices. It had an inherent sweetness to it from the onions which was TO DIE FOR, especially since all the other slices were a bit salty. AND AGAIN, the sausage is amazing!!!

The Chorizo Pastor (mexican spicy sausage, purple onion, pineapple, fresh jalapeno, jalapeno cream sauce and micro cilantro) slice was definitely the most unique one of them all. It was one of the most flavorful pizzas! AND IT HAD SO MANY TOPPINGS. AND IT'S SPICYYY. Love the burn. It tasted like a taco on a pizza. I think it is definitely fun to try at least once and I can see myself ordering it again here and there. But if I'm craving pizza, I don't know if I would order this as it doesn't hit the spot as pizza because of the flavors. Kinda comes off as a pizza/sandwich/taco hybrid. Nevertheless, it is still quite yummy!!!

SIDENOTE: definitely order a side of ranch and their chili oil/crack sauce

Overall, AMAZING PIZZA! I will 10000% be back to try all the other flavors. The obvious standouts: the crust and the sausage

SEE YOU AGAIN...

This review is way overdue. This place opened almost 8 months ago. Took me a good three months to finally try it for the first time. On my first visit, I was just in the area and got two slices to, "snack" on. The bittersweet and the pera. The bittersweet was good but the pera was so refreshing. Upon walking in, I was greeted and asked if I had been there before. They ran through the menu and then explained the pizzas are half baked and when you order them, it takes a while bc they need to bake the pizza to fully ready to eat. I LOVE that. I love food really hot and fresh. Drinks really cold. 8/10 times I will dine-in to get the fullness and freshness of food. Taking it home always changes the quality and how it should taste. When I was there Chef Sandro was there and we were chatting about pizza all around town. He mentioned that he has his restaurant called Bello in Newport. I googled it and turns out, it's been on my list too. Now, I'm even MORE excited to try more items. The dough is light and airy yet still so crispy. It's not heavy like other pizzas. It's really something I can eat when I'm not even hungry. That whole snack mentally is no longer an excuse but a reality. When in he area I can grab a slice and enjoy the quality ingredients on a slice of intricate flavors.

Every since my first time, I can say I've been maybe a dozen times as well as brought some to others to share. Everyone I have introduced it to, love it. You can taste the quality ingredients. There are days it's a bit slower due to how busy it is. Remember, it's being cooked as it's ordered so if there's orders before you it will take some time. I would say 80% of the pizzas need to be baked and then topped with other fresh ingredients when it's taken out of the oven. It's not a bake, box and done. The wait is worth it every time. There's nothing in the area that compares. The pomo italian sandwich is soo soo good. Don't forget there are made to order items that's aren't just sitting out. Don't miss out on those. The italian sodas are also imported from Italy. I'm so happy this is around and I will order, shop at mitsuwa, walk back and eat. Perfect day. Thank you Chef and team for keeping my...
