Disappointed. I've been in the area for decades and have never eaten at Acme Pizzeria. I received a coupon book mailer some time ago that featured an ad and a coupon for Acme Pizzeria. The coupon was expired and it was a discretionary call for the lady to not honor it, but as a business owner trying to garner new business, I would have chosen otherwise since it was only about a $2 discount. I would want a new patron to know how good my food and service was so they would come back. Not sure it would have made a difference though.
The coupon pictured a very generous and appetizing serving of fried clam strips, and even though I wasn't given the coupon discount I really wanted to try them since they looked great. So, I asked for the item in the picture and paid full price. What I was served was nothing as good or appealing as what was in the picture, and not even reasonably close. When I ordered it the lady said that the clam strips came with fries, which were not in the picture and I was happy about getting fries, but what was served was more like a small serving of fries with clam strips sprinkled on top. Nothing even close to the big portion of clam strips that was featured in the ad that also showed coleslaw and tartar sauce that were not served. It was such an obvious misrepresentation that I had already decided that this was a one time visit and chose not to press the point and just sat down to eat my food then leave. Whatever.
While I was seated, a man and a woman were at another table and he had just sat down with their order and seemed to have a problem with the ketchup. He gestured several times for one of the owners or employees to come to his table but was sort of ignored, until the man who worked there begrudgingly went to his table to see what the problem was. I couldn't understand what the problem was, but the owner/employee person took exception to the customer's concern and again, begrudgingly switched ketchup bottles for him in a manner that was very off-putting. When the couple had finished and started to leave the man went to the counter to address the owner/employee and actually apologize for complaining about the ketchup only to be berated for complaining.
At that point I was wondering what could be wrong with the ketchup, so I picked up the squeeze-type bottle at my own table and tried to dispense ketchup into my own basket of fries and a lot of vinegar came out, but you couldn't shake the bottle because stuff might fly out of the opening in the top. That to me would constitute a legitimate request for the restaurant to remedy the situation so a customer could enjoy their food without soaking it in vinegar.
After the couple walked out the lady came back in apparently to use the restroom quickly before leaving, but she noticed the water was running in the bathroom sink. The lady who worked there who originally took my order was in the dining area when the customer politely asked, "Excuse me, but did you know the water was running in the sink in the bathroom?" The lady employee/owner shouted back to her abruptly and loudly, and a scolding manner, "TURN IT OFF!", which was offensive and uncalled for. Instead, she could have responded with, "Oh, thanks for letting me know. It doesn't need to be running so you can turn it off please. Thank you".
I've passed by it many times and I thought Acme was just a cool little locally owned casual dining establishment and had been wanting to try it for a long time, but I won't be going back. It seems a lot of people like it, and good for them. But, my experience was quite different. I know Covid and inflation have impacted things, but a business still has to give value for the money they charge and treat customer's like human beings. Or, my advice is to just sell or quit...
Read moreGreat service and a fun atmosphere. It's so nice to have order taken by owner rather than some disinterested teen. We got takeout and when order was ready the husband owner walked it to our table with a smile. Now that is service! I would've been entirely ok with him yelling my name across the room to come get it and was pleasantly surprised by the "special delivery". Atmosphere and service notwithstanding, the make or break is the food itself. We got the Supreme pizza and went ahead and ate it on the spot. The toppings were fresh with generous amounts, but the cacophony of flavors failed to meld together into a symphony of taste, conflicting the taste buds with every bite. But what makes a pizza is the dough, sauce and cheese, not the toppings per se. On this score Acme comes up short. The dough was clearly fresh and had potential, but it was slightly undercooked and had a cracker like taste. I thought it was ok but wife didn't like. And the dough taste completely made the sauce and cheese an afterthought. In fact, as I reflect back, I don't even remember what the sauce tasted like as the dough and the toppings stole the show. That is not good for a pizza. Still, it was ok. But major chains with the science of sauce, flavor and millions of dollars in R&D, consumer research, etc are clearly better. If I lived in Cottonwood i'd probably still come here 3 to 4 times a year. I wouldn't mind trying some of the other food, and I love supporting local businesses. But being from out of town I doubt I'll ever go to the effort coming from Sedona or Jerome to go out of my way to the little indescript strip mall that this place...
Read moreWe were on a family trip to Sedona. We spent a day in Cottonwood where we were walking around the second-hand stores to see what kind of stuff there was. We were getting hungry, so we pulled out our phones to find what kind of local joints there were to eat at. I found two pizza joints that were on our way back, one being Acme. They had the better average score, so that's what we decided on.
When you walk in, it looks like a small pizza dive. Order at the counter, about 10 or so tables to sit at and a cooler and soda dispenser for drinks. My parents had ordered the Taz Mania pizza and I ordered a make your own pizza. The crust on these pizzas was one of the best I've had. Its a thin crust with just a hint of the fluffiness of a hand tossed. The sauce had the right bite to it. Enough spice and herb to it to be tasty without being obnoxious. And I personally like that ordering garlic on a pizza ends in slices of garlic instead of minced. My only gripe is that the mozzarella sticks looked and tasted like they were fresh out of the bag from the store. Had they been hand made, I would have rated this place five stars. But definitely worth the stop if you're...
