I think this may have been the best dining experience we've had in town. The restaurant was VERY cozy and stylish. Clearly well taken care of and loved, whereas other restaurants in town are moderately or severely run down.
Our waiter was a pure gem. He was genuinely friendly and attentive, but not at all pushy, interuptive, or insistive. He was the only waiter there, yet was attending to the restaurant half-full on his own with grace and efficiency. A very relaxed and kind fellow that really made the whole experience come together. For once we didn't have to try to relax on a nice night out, we could just relax.
I had some sort of greek chicken-rice soup as an appetizer of sorts. (I wish to not butcher the greek language.) That came with a side of 4 slices of beautifully baked pita bread. Presented in a very clean and fun way surrounding the soup. The bread was cloud-soft, warm to the core, and ever-so-slightly seasoned to give it a rich yet humble taste. The seasoning gave it a wonderful grainy texture on the outside. I HATE when restaurants hand out chips, fries, or bread as a complimentary dish. They always go to waste because it's never very good and likely was factored into the cost of the entrees themselves. We had received another plate of pitas with a plate of their signature greek yogurt (complimentary for our entrees, I suppose.) The greek yogurt was very rich and felt clean on the body. It's like a more sub-dued, lighter ranch. It went deliciously with the pita bread.
Anyways, the soup was served just on the tipping point of being too hot. Perfect temperature and was very inviting on the eyes. I was immediately concerned with the serving size, as it was around $5.50 yet felt like there was less soup than you'd find in a single serve top ramen bag. It was mostly broth, but there were two small spoon-sized lumps of chicken, and an alternative white rice. The rice seemed like it would only cover the bottom of the bowl with a very thin layer if it wasn't floating. I understand it came with bread, but I'd much prefer more soup as that was hardly anything, (and it was what I ordered...) The soup itself was bursting with lemon and made my mouth feel very fresh, awake, and alive. It's not my preferred kind of soup, but I could very well tell that for what it was trying to do, it executed excellently. The rice and chicken were more there for occasional variety in texture and appearance, it seems. They didn't have much of an identity themselves, but that worked very well for what the dish was going for. The broth provided ample flavor.
Onto the entrees. I had the Classic Burger, I believe it was called. I was not prepared at all for what would come. When the food arrived, I... didn't see a burger at first. I then realized my burger would be breaded by more pita bread. It looked very interesting and delectable. Upon taking my first bite, I was so overwhelmingly pleased that I finished with a couple minutes. It was a good size and plated in a very inviting manner. I had never thought to use pita bread for burgers before, it works so incredibly well. It sinks in sync with the meat as you bite (I take meat well done.) It doesn't get in the way of a bite and ensures a very good balance of bread to fillings. It was cooked beautifully and thoroughly. The seasonings and flavorings they used were divine. If you've ever tasted In-N-Out, (which I previously thought had the best burgers of all time), this tastes just like that, but better. It tastes very similar but has a much more clean feeling as you eat it. Lot less messy too with the flat, half-cut pita bread. Very, very pleased. The chips it came with were very unnecessary though.
My partner had a greek macaroni lasagna of sorts. She thought it would be a soup, so she was a bit surprised. She said she enjoyed it but maybe wouldn't get it again. It wasn't to her personal tastes.
We'll definitely be coming again one day. We appreciate the great service by our...
Read moreFirst off I want to be clear this isn’t a negative review it is just a neutral rating, I have to go back and give it a second try in order to my real input. It was a Saturday night was kind of busy and maybe they were just having an off night so didn’t want to bother them with a lot of questions. The atmosphere is nice, the owner and waitress were great but the kitchen was very slow in getting out the orders, really slow! Again that’s why I said I will have to go back again to really give it a proper review. The menu had a lot of authentic dishes although I would have loved to see grilled octopus on the menu it’s just a personal favorite. As far as appetizers we ordered the hummus, fried eggplant, fried zucchini and of course the saganaki as for main dishes we had the gyro platter and the pork platter. I am originally from NY and grew up going to a lot of Greek friends’ homes for feasts so some of my input may seem picky but it’s only because I’m used to having home cooked Greek dishes. Again this is all just my personal preferences and what I grew up with and the major point I’m trying to get to is that for non-franchise restaurants to stick out they really need to take the extra step in keeping it real and by real I mean homemade, there are a lot of restaurants here in Culpeper especially for a small town so it’s not hard to make a foot print if you stick to tradition, it will pay off! I’m going to skip reviewing the fried eggplant sticks because that’s just what it is fried eggplant sticks, the fried zucchini I enjoyed it’s a zucchini batter rolled into logs coated and then fried. The hummus was good but not sure it was homemade it was way too smooth like store bought but had a nice taste the saganaki was good I mean come on its fried cheese but not served in the traditional sense again im used to traditional flaming saganaki. So for the main dishes, the pork platter was enjoyable the onions made that dish as far as the gyro well again keep in mind im a new Yorker so may seem abit picky, don’t get me wrong it had a decent flavor but not sure it was homemade carved off the spit real gyro meat it was very thin and uniform so not sure it was hand carved off that huge rotating spit that I am used to it was like the meat from arbys. again I didn’t want to bother the owner to talk to him considering the circumstances this night. Again will have to give it a second try maybe when they are slower so have time to really speak with them but the big downfalls for me are some of the items that just didn’t seem homemade the little touches which would make them stick out again they may be time consuming but the extra effort pays off like the pita I personally hate store bought pita make them homemade and bring them out hot. As far as the hummus and tzatziki I could be wrong but didn’t seem homemade to me they didn’t stand out as such which is very important. Will update review when I have time for a...
Read moreFirst time diner here a few days ago with party of 6 -- no other customers in house during much of our time there. Waiter came promptly to take drink orders -- very polite, attentive, & efficient throughout most of our dinner. Said he'd been dishwasher up to today -- now waiting tables -- good job overall, could bus table more frequently, moving around table as needed instead of reaching in front of diners from one end of table. Food orders took approx 30 - 40 mins to start arriving -- we had a variety of meals including my own of shrimp pasta. All were served piping hot & looking very fresh -- large portions. Mine was last served -- the included side, green beans, was delivered 1st -- arriving in very shallow plate/bowl filled to brim with seasoned tomato sauce over fresh green beans. Unexpected presentation but very tasty. Shrimp pasta arrived in large pasta bowl -- lovely appearance -- 7 - 8 jumbo shrimp atop spaghetti pasta, covered by a golden yellow savory sauce with crumbled feta cheese & garnishes. The problem: the shrimp were still in shell & tightly in shell! They were very hot to pick up & crack open -- sauce dripping down hands -- it was a mess to eat. I gave up after 2 shrimp. While the food was delicious, my experience was ruined by the frustration I felt in trying to eat shrimp spaghetti with my hands. I wouldn't have ordered this dish had I known it would be served this way. Chef Albana came out during our meal & asked how we liked everything -- I replied that my meal was delicious but too messy to eat & asked her why the shrimp were left in shell -- she said "to keep them juicy, get hands dirty!" I suggested she reconsider. All our other diners seemed to be delighted with their meals -- I took home 3/4 of mine. Doubt that it will reheat well. Wish I could rate this visit higher -- maybe another time,...
