Warm Service, Missed Potential
I recently visited this teahouse for a special themed tea event and while the staff were absolutely wonderful—attentive, kind, and impressively accommodating when it came to my food allergies—the overall experience left a bit to be desired.
Let’s start with the positives: the service was truly top-notch. The staff made every effort to ensure I felt safe and welcome, double-checking ingredients and making thoughtful substitutions where needed. In an era where food allergies are often brushed off or misunderstood, this level of care was deeply appreciated.
Unfortunately, the ambiance didn’t match the warmth of the service. The space felt more like a generic hotel banquet room than a cozy, charming teahouse. It lacked the kind of decor and atmosphere that usually makes afternoon tea feel special or transportive.
As for the themed event, it was a nice idea in theory—but poorly executed. Aside from some creatively named menu items, there was little to no effort to carry the theme through the tea blends, presentation, or decor. It felt like a missed opportunity to create an immersive experience.
The food itself was fine, but not memorable. Compared to other coffee shops and bakeries in town, both the flavor and presentation were underwhelming. Nothing was particularly bad, but nothing stood out either—and for the price and concept, I had hoped for more.
All in all, I’d come back if I were in the area and wanted to support a place with kind-hearted, allergy-aware staff—but for a true yummy food experience, I’d recommend trying one of the more atmospheric and flavorful options...
Read moreThis place was disappointing. I made a reservation online and had to get an approval before it confirmed the time. We showed up a couple minutes ahead of time and there were plenty of tables available. We stood at the door for 5 minutes and finally flagged the waitress. She didn’t even ask if we had a reservation and it looks like we didn’t even need one because it was empty at lunch time. We finally get a table and order but the waitress is overly friendly the entire time. She was up in everyone’s business. She insisted that the other tables go take a photo outside and she would go take it for you. It was awkward. Well we get our afternoon tea with all the sandwiches. The chicken salad is blah, then there was a piece of bread with 3 cucumbers on it and some hummus. The sandwiches were underwhelming. The desserts were a little better with a s’mores brownie, blueberry scone, macaroon, and lemon bar. The tea was actually very good and didn’t need sugar. Every interaction with the waitress was odd and made us feel weird. The decor was odd - like gothic and great Gadsby at the same time. The room is literally an open room. There are no signs on the outside or walking in. You have to walk through an overpriced bookstore and up the stairs. No signing at all. The bookstore employees directed us where to go. Overall, very disappointing. Two stars because the dessert was ok. But $40 for a couple bites of generic food is not worth it. There was nothing special, the food was blah, and the service...

Miss Minerva's Tea Room has moved. It is on Main Street in Culpeper as part of the State Theater building. Enter by Hundred Acre Books, go straight to stairs on the right (I believe elevator is just further ahead). Head to the second floor. There you are. Yes, Sangria Bowl was here before. The outside roof dining and relaxing view are still here. Still walking distance from the train station, 2 1/2 blocks South of Main and Davis. Park for free right across the street if you are driving. No reservations needed Fridays through Sundays.
Now that you are here . . . did you notice that Miss Minerva's is not JUST a tea room? It has a full-blown restaurant menu to satisfy everyone. Men too. I had the Bogart roast beef sandwich. It came with a crisp pickle and the freshest fruit salad. The soup of the day was red pepper-tomato. This is THE BEST tomato-based soup I have ever tasted. Ever. If I were running for President, my platform would be to send this soup to the starving people of the world. It would feed them body and soul. This soup will bring world peace.
The tea menu is nicely long. I had Miss Minerva's Special Blend which was divine. Tea is served in China cups on a properly set table.
The owners are such fun and have great taste in background music.
Are you still there? Save a seat for me! I am on my way! I just have to make a quick stop at...
