OK, so this weekend, on 4/13/25 I was watching a YouTube interview on this place called Honey Kettle Fried chicken.
My wife and I love fried chicken. We make it all the time with all the fixing!
I was so intrigued by the owners story so much that I wanted to show are support for him and his family. So I didn’t even tell my wife we were going after running are errands for the day. I wanted to surprise her with a great meal, needless to say I was super excited and my mouth was watering all the way there expecting to taste some great food and show her a new place that we could visit and eat at for many years to come.
Unfortunately the prices were through the roof for the little bit of food we ordered. Now, I don’t mine kicking in and paying top dollar for a great meal, but don’t play me. I do know how to cook as well.
Look if I’m gonna spend my hard earned money, hell if any one is going to spend there hard earned money, you expect to be able to eat and eat well and with those prices, I expected it to be better than what I cook.
My wife ordered: Sunday Dinner - $20.75 Myself I ordered: 3.1 Hotcakes & Chicken - $18.75
I spent $65.97 for One piece of chicken and three pancakes and a $9 blueberry lemonade, my wife ordered a leg and wing with two sides, yams and red beans and rice and some how ended up with mashed potato and gravy also. She also swapped out the biscuit for a piece of cornbread.
FYI it’s $5 for a piece of cornbread and the batter doesn’t even cost that much! But ok… Nor did it taste like a $5 piece of cornbread.
Look Famous Dave’s makes better cornbread, and they don’t charge that much! It’s $2.64 at Walmart for a box. Brake out the box and a cast Iron skillet and boom! JK
Anyway she didn’t care for the red beans and rice, but I thought they were good aside from being lukewarm, but here’s the kick in the head the yams and mashed potatoes were hard. You know, like I know he should these side should be soft and pleasant to the pallet. My wife said the yams were like eating a carrot plain with no flavor of butter, cinnamon or nutmeg taste and the mashed potatoes taste like they were out of the box.
The only reason why we knew it wasn’t out of the box was because there were noticeable lumpy hard unmatched pieces of potato’s in it. One piece of potato was bigger than a silver dollar and it was hard and uncooked. Where is the QC! Slow down check and taste the food before you charge outrageous prices, and served your customers.
So I returned the uncooked yams and potatoes for a refund and a young lady said she has to refund the whole order and then charge me all over again so she did. I’m expecting that I’m going to get a couple of dollars back. Lol I got less than $.80 back. She recharged me $65.20. I left feeling like this places is was a joke!
And lastly, the chicken was decent, and the pancakes were excellent hot and fresh as expected but after waiting so long for the order, I would’ve expected my one and only peace of chicken to be hot but instead I got a small lukewarm breast after paying $65.
We make better food at home! So unfortunate, we won’t be back.
Bottom line if I eat at your place and the food and service is good. I’m your customer for life.
After we left we were still hungry, so we went to Taco Pete’s in the hood off of Crenshaw and Slauson and got. 10 tacos cooked to order fresh and hot and one burrito for 35 bucks. We couldn’t even eat is all so we took the rest home.
Just know I don’t normally write reviews. It’s just not my thing. but in this case, I’m making an exception, step your...
Read moreMy husband and I drive from Compton occasionally to get our Honey Kettle Fried Chicken fix, however on 5/25/24 around 9:40p.m may have just disappointed us all the way around from the service to the cleanliness of the lobby to the quality of our food. First I believe customer service is everything and when you have people in your establishment that just does not have not only good customer service but no people skills at all that’s a complete disaster waiting to happen. My experience started with calling in our order and the young lady that answered the phone was very rude I asked was there a bundle deal with the biscuits so that I wouldn’t have to purchase the biscuits individually her response was you can get however many biscuits you want and I ignored it and proceeded to complete our order. At 9:09 p.m. I told it would be about 15 minutes so we gave some extra time and came into the restaurant at 9:40p.m. and first point of contact was the young lady who answered the phone and her attitude was worst in person. I approached the counter to let her know we were picking up a phone order, she then says dine in or out but because of her strong accent I didn’t understand her at first so I asked again about our phone order and she says it again dine in or out now by this time I’m so confused because why would I place a phone order to dine in so I let my husband continue to deal with the young lady. She then takes the payment from my husband gives him the receipt and we take a seat in the lobby area where trash was all over the floor I have never seen the restaurant like this before even on a busy day or night or close to closing so I was super skeptical to even eat from here at this point , but it didn’t stop there because now we were waiting another 10 to 15 minutes for our food that was ordered over the phone, so I asked the other young lady that was expediting the orders what was the policy as far as phone orders because we had been waiting for a phone order that should have already been ready that was the sole purpose of us calling it in, the young lady asks to see our receipt and the cashier (Melody) butts in and yells to the expediter it’s coming out and we waited another 5 to 7 minutes and was given our food , however at the time I didn’t check the freshness of the fries until we got in our vehicle and to my surprise after all that waiting we ended up with cold fries to the point where I was done for the night with this overall experience we were having at one of our favorite places to eat. Also when I asked about speaking to a manager I was told there wasn’t a manager available and I know that there was a PIC on site because who was going to close the store up. After this experience I think I’m good on patronizing your establishment for a while it was great while it lasted. Started patronizing the Compton location and when you guys moved to Culver City have patronized even more, but I’m good now. Further reference Melody needs to be trained further. We spent $110 and received horrible service and cold fries make it...
Read moreWe traveled over 500 miles to eat here. So disappointed. Its been a week and I thought long and hard about posting.
Look, there is a HUGE problem with consistency. Last Sunday, someone either didn't come in for work to cook or the kitchen fell massively behind b/c if deliveries.
Someone who has a vested and /or financial interest in this establishment needs to be in there at the beginning of the day to quality control what is being served.
The chicken for my order was lukewarm, with a visible feather chicken breast and it was tiny. The pancakes were tiny. Other orders - of the same item - that came out after my order were the correct size as advertised and consistent between the different tables.
The mac and cheese is a soupy sloppy unseasoned mess. The pasta was overboiled. Salt and pepper are not actual seasonings.
The yams WERE. NOT. FULLY. COOKED. This one BLOWS my mind given the owners are African American. Closer to raw than cooked. There was a least 45 minutes to one hour ccok time more needed to achieve the correct consistency. Please don't serve this foolishness to 'us'. I returned them and they charged me extra because I replaced with mac n cheese. I would not have done this if I had tasted the mac n cheese beforehand.
The staff seemed lost. There was a main African American woman who seemed to have to tell all of them all how to do their jobs. From what to ring at the register to what was included with breakfast to what should be cooking. I'm sure this is very draining. There was only 1 cook with at least 3 other eligible people who could have dropped chicken or done the pancakes. Waste of labor.
My husband ordered the spinach & mushroom omlete and he enjoyed it. It tasted delicious when I sampled it.
I would go back - if I was in the area organically - to talk to an owner about how some of his employees are running his business...
