The Kirk Douglas Theater is part of the Center Theater Group, in Downtown LA. This is its newest acquisition, located in Culver City. It is smaller than their other theaters and it is budget friendly.
The theater itself used to be a movie house. I recall going there as a child in the 50s and 60s. It was later closed down, having to give way to the multi plex's that pretty much destroyed the single movie house.
The Center Theater Group took it over and returned it to all of its beautiful splendor and added a great new lobby. They redid all the neon and the beautiful tile flooring outside, they redid the Box Office to look just like it did when I was a kid. I don't know if they use it.
All of it is just stunning. The lobby is so very comfortable where you can relax and meet up with your group. They have merch sections and once you walk in the theater itself you will find comfortable seating, not a bad seat in the house, and a wonderful stage.
We saw Winnie the Pooh there, which was for kids, and it was a special event. What they usually have is a season of newer plays, more edgy plays and plays you will not see elsewhere. From comedy to drama, they have it all. You simply go to the Center Theater Website and you will find The Kirk Douglas. You can get a Season Pass or just buy one play. They do tend to sell out so take a peek for this season.
This place is just perfect. In the heart of little downtown Culer City, great food is within walking distance. Parking is on the street or you can park in the lot across the street for a reasonable fee.
You must go catch a play if you are in town. You will have a great...

It was really good and it was especially very poignant and powerful for me since it was about the Asian-American experience ๐ณ during the pandemic ๐ท! One of the most touching โค๏ธ and heartwarming highlights โจ was the beautiful ๐ handmade quilt ๐ by the Aunties Sewing Squad ๐งต๐ชก ๐ฅฐ!
I really needed something to help me unwind and destress ๐ from work, and Kristinaโs show definitely helped me relax โบ๏ธ! I also really liked how the Kirk Douglas Theater ๐ญ is very small and intimate and very easy to get to ๐! Every seat ๐บ in the house is great ๐! You really can view ๐ the stage so well from any seat ๐๐!
Parking is free for 3 hours at the City Hall parking structure across the street, as long as you get your parking ticket from the structure validated at the theater ๐! The structure itself is very straightforward and easy to park in. But just keep in mind that even though the City Hall address itself is on Culver Blvd, you have to enter their parking structure from Duquesne.
I will definitely come back for more shows since parking at City Hall is validated by the theater, and itโs not a huge hassle to get to ๐ , compared to some...
ย ย ย Read moreThe most important thing to know and appreciate about the Kirk Douglas is that it is a major theater presenting major works but that it is the only theater of that caliber in the Los Angeles area that affords the intimate contact between performer and audience that makes for those profound moments of connection that can change one's perception. There are many small, intimate theaters scattered throughout Los Angeles, but they are usually venues for local talent or places to present new works by hopeful playwrights and performers. The Douglas draws on internationally renown performers often performing more intimate works. The late, great British actor John Hurt performed Beckett's "Krapp's Last Tape" there in 2012. Recently, the wonderful Bill Irwin presented his actor's workshop "On Beckett" at the Douglas. It is not a theater in the "Grand" sense; rather it is an unpretentious, simple theater where the grandness takes place on the stage when the performer and audience are in close enough proximity that they experience a collective...
