With CoViD once more on the rise, my family sought a break from the monotony of our own cooking last night, which was a Saturday evening, and decided to try ordering a pie for pickup from La Rocco's Pizzeria for the very first time.
The fact that I've woken in the wee hours of the following Sunday morning feeling like I need to write this review in order to get back to sleep probably says it all. Indeed I've awoken with tummy pain.
I feel it must be said that every person I spoke to at La Rocco's over the course of Saturday evening was truly and unfailingly kind, which makes the experience of writing this review especially poignant.
Where the disappointment comes is in the execution of our order. We ordered one of the house pies, The Puttanesca. We were very hungry and decided to add ricotta and fresh tomato toppings to give our dinner a little extra heft.
What we received was truly confounding. The house formula states that this pie comes with a specialty garlic and oil sauce, and with basil, both of which were entirely missing from ours. The original sauce was inexplicably replaced with some sort of tomato sauce, and while we received our custom ricotta topping, our fresh tomato slices were M.I.A., leading to much speculation among us as to the logic applied to the construction of our pie, or what could have possibly been going on in that kitchen to result in this (mis)interpretation of our order...
When pizza to go is the only bright spot in an otherwise quarantined Saturday night 9 months in, expectations will be high!
When I phoned La Rocco's to let them know our order had been made differently than promised, I reached a very genial lady who volunteered to refund us for our missing tomatoes, but even she seemed to be having trouble wrapping her mind around the other mistakes that had been made. She simply offered us a replacement pie, but we were really hungry, already home, and we'd gone fairly far out of our way to pick up the first pie. In retrospect, I feel I should have asked her if she would have been willing to deliver the replacement as an addition to our pickup, even though we are 1.1 miles outside of La Rocco's delivery zone. We would have jumped at that offer.
Being La Rocco's first timers, we hadn't suspected anything was wrong with our pickup based on looks alone.
Weird tasting as it was, we ate the pizza we had on hand. For a first impression, we could tell the components of the pizza were of high quality, but the bizarrely missing ingredients and unexpected addition unbalanced the flavor profile significantly. On top of that, I am a supertaster so the lack of ballast for the brined toppings made them over the top salty and acidic, and I've been awoken by that kind of accompanying tummy pain.
We so wanted our experience to be delicious, especially after having read so many rave reviews, and from our first try we can imagine what a really good pizza from this restaurant must be like, but whether we will ever order again is up in the air like a tossed pizza crust. Please forgive my punchy, up at night with indigestion...
Read moreBest pizza I have found in LA!! We moved here earlier in the year and we've been on a journey to find a pizza place that really stood out to us. (We are pizza connoisseurs in this household, you can trust my opinion) We tried many recommendations that everyone always seems to talk about, but none of them were IT. Something was always lacking in one way or another.
But LaRocco's is a whole different story! Their pizza is SO SO GOOD. flavorful, perfecly cooked, it's got everything it needs. Highly recommend Their pepperoni pizza.
Now I'm not saying they're perfect, here's some things we aren't fond of.
Their sausage pizza. The sausage is flat like pepperoni. Never had sausage like that, I'd much prefer the classic style sausage. I feel like you can barely tell theres sausage on it.
Their garlic bread, it's just your basic garlic bread you'd find in the freezer section at the grocery store. But by the time it gets to you it's just, not it.
The garlic knots were also very mid. They came kind of burnt, but even if they weren't, I wouldn't order them again.
Some things that'd make this place literally perfect would be an improvement on the apps, and a couple additions to it as well. I'm talking mozzerella sticks, and some good garlic cheesy bread.
If you're needing a good New York style pizza place, look no further, just give...
Read moreI' never coming here ever again. Holding $20 voucher given to me by Maja Jeremic Community Engagement Manager of Ting Culver City, I came walking in on the night 04/03/2024 at 8:30PM. There behind the Cashier Register was Nadia .F.
I asked for the Larocco's Special for 18 inch for $29.99. I gave them a credit for payment, and did not gave me a receipt (I should of known better and asked for it). When I came back to pick up my order they could not find my phone number or the name of the pick up. they mistaken me for someone else's name.
And they decided to charge me again! they remembered the Voucher and my face. but Nadia. F never remembered taking my card and never giving me a receipt. but still charged me a second time.
looking back in this moment I should never let this go. I have been a resident on downtown culver city for over 24 years. there is no integrity at Larocco's I'll be going next door to that new pizza place. Hopefully they are more truthful with their customers.
and Nadia.F looked at me like a Zoo Animal the moment I presented that Voucher. Its as if saying "there we go another one of those vouchers" it seems to me they double charged me to cover the charge of the $20 Voucher. Talk about cheapskates no...
